Scaly Justice thanks the 12 paddlers who pitched in and signed up to our seriously deficient roster on Friday and on Saturday morning.
A HUGE thanks goes out to:
Team Draco from Calgary
Sagging Dragons from Vancouver
Women on Fire from Kelowna
Deep Cove Perfect Catch
THANKS!!

Kelowna, well I was going to bitch about all these things about what happened this weekend to my team but someone told me to take a couple of days to sit and reflect and then post so I did. Didn't work, but one thing I have to say is that all the years I've been paddling I never saw any weather like that before.Nobody saw that coming so I am not mad anymore and Congrats to the teams who won, even though I'm still mad but that's racing.

I had to leave a little early to go home, any idea when all the final official results will be posted?

My hat is off to the organizers who made the right decisions at the right times to save the festival in the face of extraordinary conditions. Sure some minor mistakes were made as they improvised on Sunday but at least every team got to race a semi-final and all (or almost all) the finals were held, with only the consolation finals getting cut. Maybe some teams had "better" starts than others but those are the breaks when the weather isn't cooperating. Would you rather spend 30 minutes trying to line up the boats perfectly? I was just glad to have the opportunity to race.
I would also like to add my thanks to the volunteer steerspeople, especially the guy from TD Lightning who steered our boat. We were in the heat where the race officials decided to put the BUKs back in action. The wind had dropped but things were still pretty choppy. We were right heavy and had a couple of nice waves come over the side. For a moment I thought I was paddling OC, not DB. Our steersman must have had nerves of steel and great balance to deal with the pitch and yaw.

Jason (TD Lightning) is awesome!!! He's steered for us (BluByU) many times... I can honestly say I'd rather have him steering our boat than myself!!!
Hat's off you you Jason!!!

As one of the race management team members I too have nothing but good things to say to people like Jason (aka Straightline) for steering for not only their own crews but also for lots of other steers people who felt they probably should not be out on the water in rougher than normal conditions. There were about 8 to 10 steerspeople from other crews that volunteered and helped steer for other teams. For example I personally wanted to thank the Eye of the Dragon dragon boat racing team's own steersperson, whose name escapes me. He steered for my crew as well because my crew's own steersperson felt he should not be out there due to the weather conditions. And he did an awesome job! Phat Phish Racing was very much appreciative of his steering especially during the semi finals. In the end the weather had improved somewhat. We went back with our original steersperson to steer in the finals and that worked out in the end as well. But we would not have been able to make it to the finals if not for the volunteer steerspeople that helped all the crews out! Way to goooo to all the volunteer steerspeople!

Thank you Cookie and Rightarm and all others who have personally come up to me to say nice things about what we did as a race management team. We do try to make things as safe as possible. And at the same time realize that we all came to Kelowna to race. Safety was never going to take a back seat as far as we are concerned. And thank you to all of you who appreciated how things were decided/came to be/were explained when we stated our position and I truly thank you for that understanding. I personally believe all those who questioned results/placings understood why they were done and accepted them as they were in the end. It was by far the most challenging for me as a race official in all the races I have been involved in, in all the years I have been involved in DB race management. And I feel you were all equally appreciative considering what we had to deal with.
Once again thank you all for being understanding and for putting yourselves in our "shoes" in accepting things as they came to be. I believe you understood our positions as race officials once they were explained considering all that we had to endure.

I think I'm going to hide now....
Sunday was a tough day for racing and I'm certainly glad I wasn't one of the race officials. Water conditions ranged from "entertaining" to "smooth as glass" to "what am I doing out here?" and were constantly changing which made for difficult decisions regarding the day's schedule. TD had some of the best water conditions I saw during the semi-final round in the Platinum Semi Final 2, but fifteen minutes later, the conditions were just brutal for the women's Platinum final.
As one of the volunteer steers people Sunday morning, I would like to thank all of the teams that allowed me to come onto their boats and take them out for their race. I know from experience that it is not easy having a steers person you're not familiar with taking your team out to race especially in the challenging conditions we faced.

I have several hundred of pictures from Kelowna, however I HAD to post these. I don't know the name of the team, but it was Heat 1 on Sat. morning, and I believe they were racing the Shaggin' Dragons. As they were paddling by, I heard someone give a yell, and next thing I knew, they were paddling with the handles of their paddles! Funniest thing I saw all day! Thanks for the entertainment!

hehe I was hoping someone would catch that! That's FODB, but all credit goes to Puppy for the idea. What you don't see in the pic is that this is just the backhalf doing that stroke, we decided we wanted to make the front half work a little harder

Although it was disappointing not to be able to have two races on Sunday...it could have been worse and I am thankful to at least have had one. It was an awesome race and quite a wild ride..the whole team thought it was a blast ...thank you to Kelly (I am pretty sure that was his name) who steered for us (WOW- Women on Water)....he did a fantastic job and really encouraged us...we all appreciated it!
Hats off to everyone that went out there race after race to help out! In all my years of being at the festival this was the first I have ever seen this happen....and everyone made the best of it.
So thanks!

Hey Bernie,
Eye of the Dragon's steersperson is named Harvey. We love our Harvey. Apparently Sean of Fluid Motion also helped out quite a bit with steering. Along with Jason from TD, way to go our Vancouver steering triumvirate, fine ambassadors for DZ/False Creek.
Cheers,
Nestah

Diamond Final A
1. Portland Fire Dragons - 2:20.490
2. Dragon Hearts 10th Edition - 2:20:750
3. Guardian Dragons - 2:22.440
4. Superslim Phat Phish Racing - 2:25.340
5. Just Dragon Along - 2:26.400
6. Topmade Fusion Power - 2:27.430
Are you sure those times are right?? Didn't they use the times from the semi finals as the finals? At that point we were racing a 250m course, so they'd be in the low 1 min. range..or so I thought..

Both the Diamond A and Platinum A finals were 500m races with all six boats racing together.
