What happened to Masters of D'Zone and Sudden Impact ? I would have predicted them both to be top 3. How did the Platinum semis go?
Masters went 4th in platinum semi 1 (in lane 5 next to us) thus not advancing.
The results of that race are still, and always will be, up in the air... I'm sure they believe they did better than the results reflected (not that I want to speak for them but I know a protest was launched), as did my team. In the end, it doesn't matter, those are the results and they stood. Keeping that in mind, anyone that doubted the 3 teams who made it through to the final from that heat would have been wrong, River City and RGL and PR2 went 1 2 and 3 respectively and earned it well in a tough heat against some pretty crazy conditions.
Not to say that masters couldn't have done better, they were ranked 3rd after day 1. But, they were racing a different roster than that which was at the CCC's due to some of the paddlers being at the worlds... how much of a difference it made is hard to tell as an outsider, but i would suspect things would have been significantly different based on what we saw in Calgary.
The team that was consistent in posting times at the top of the ladder throughout the weekend was River City... I believe their 2nd heat on saturday they posted a 2:01 and Masters had the next closest time at 2:05 (we came in around 4th or 5th i believe with 2:07)
Sudden Impact I believe went 4th in Platinum semi 2, but i was a little preoccupied at that moment and may have that wrong.
Standings after Saturday were as follows (semi heats in brackets)
1st - River City Dragons (1)
2nd - NAVY (2)
3rd - Masters of D'zone (1)
4th - Dragnum (2)
5th - Pac Reach 2 (1)
6th - Sudden Impact Black (2)
7th - Fresh off the Dragon Boat (1)
8th - Crews Control Reunited (2)
9th - RGL (1)
10th - TD Lightening (2)
11th - Blu-by-u (1)
12th - Scotia (2)
So really, when you look at that and given the format change on sunday, its not a far stretch to say things ended up ROUGHLY where they should have. Again, a stellar effort by RGL in the final takes them from 9th to 2nd... that's impressive.
As for if Dragnum was seeded improperly... yeah sure they were. did it make a bit of difference? nope. they made it to platinum and didn't get past the semis. I for one am not surprised as the 250m format does not tend to favor the calgary teams... after having raced against them for the past two seasons, they are slower on the starts and very strong on the finishes, but that is in the 500 meter distance... Last month in Calgary we were owning the 200m distance but both Dragnum and Gaurdian got us on the 500m in the end, and its all about their killer, LONG finishes.
