Bernie,

No matter what any ignorant, self-centered, inconsiderate paddlers say, you and the your organization did a fantastic job up at Kelowna!!!  Dance

You guys were able get us racing...although everything was delayed and some races even cancelled but at least the Platinum and Diamond final races went as planned.  Very Happy

I only have one tiny little issue about the weekend and that is, why did you guys not want to have anything to due with the award ceremony? I know we don't know the whole story behind your decision but it would be nice if we (the paddlers) were given a reason. The awards ceremony is what we always look forward to at the end of the festival. It was so disappointing!  Thinking

Anyway, thank you and your crew for an awesome weekend!!!  Clapping

Yes, Kudos to what Bernman was referring to as "Greg Lamb & associates" for pulling off a good weekend of racing in a situation that could have gone really wrong.  I think they did a tremendous job.  I won't say I left 100% satisfied with the way things unfolded, but their job is to make the races as fair and as safe as possible for the racers, and they did that.  They acted quickly and made sound decisions to keep the festival moving, including a full format change, that ensured all necessary races took place, all the while not compromising the safety of the participants.

I think sometimes we as paddlers, particularly those of us who feel that "competitive fire" in our guts, forget there are certain things that are beyond the control of the mere mortals who put on these events for us, and we shift the blame to them.  I know I was certainly guilty of that for a while after the platinum semi yesterday... once the adrenaline stopped flowing and I'd had a chance to think things over, all was fine, but in the heat of the moment, its hard not take things personally.   Mistakes were made, yes, but in the big scheme of things they are insignificant, and the organizers remained consistent and put on a quality event in spite of what mother nature threw at them.

What more can we ask for really?

Results (unofficial - was eyeballing it contemplating a long drive and how hungry I was) from Platinum A
1) River City Dragons
2) RGL
3) Pac Reach 2
4,5,6 in no particular order were Navy, TD and... Scotia I believe.

- I'm really only certain of River City, the other two are just my educated guesses from the line I was watching.  River City were the clearly dominant team of the weekend, really taking it up a notch over last year's 3rd place performance.

I don't recall the order from Diamond A as the team I was cheering for came 5th or 6th (JDA) and I have a mental block on the rest.  Topmade I believe was also near the bottom of that heat.

I also wanted to give a special thanks to Puppy who really lended a helping hand to my crew at this festival... he is truly a classy guy and one of the biggest supporters of the dragon boat community.

Cheers

Mike from FODB

PS - WAY TO GO RGL!  even if i'm wrong about that second place finish, what a hell of a performance in that platinum final!

Up to this point, who has said anything to the contrary??

I very much appreciate the attention given to all paddlers for safety!  Weather conditions are not easily controlled but the creativity used to get people racing was excellent and provided an opportunity for those who wanted...to race!  I love doing sprints and it was a great solution to a difficult scenario!

As any competitive paddler would be I was frustrated by the difficulty in getting a start where all were evenly lined up.  As well, I don't quite understand how some of the times were determined.  Perhaps all of these things were as a result of the crazy weather...

Thanks to all who worked so hard this weekend!  Staff and volunteers, you rock!  This was definitely a memorable event for so many reasons!

Unfortunately, there were quite a few complainers overheard up in Kelowna before we left last night.  Yelling

As of the moment the forecast is looking great for Saturday and Sunday, according to weathernetwork.com its supposed to be 24 each day with 0% POP... BUT interestingly enough, monday is supposed to be 100% POP, so... that's rather suspect.  lets all cross our fingers that the nasty weather stays away until after the races are done!

I guess Environment Canada was wrong, AGAIN!

It's a tough situation.  Some of the purported complaints were likely justified...but its tough given the inclement conditions.  Some of those starts were pretty dodgy on Sunday.  Hopefully no teams will be discouraged from attending next year.

Once again , a great end of season festival ,and definitely a learning experience , I would also like to thank all the steerspeople that gave up their spare time to help out, keeping the races going , Not every team that attends has choppy waters to practice in , Tough conditions had to be answered with tough decisions , that likely did not please everyone, but it is a water sport !!and safety has to be #1 priority, and  i don't think any boat lost its crew, so good job everyone
BTW whats the price of scrap in kelowna ? how many teams had tents etc. wrecked. 8am on the Sunday the paddlers village looked a bit like a battlefield .

Now who wants to go to Hawaii  ??? even bigger waves there!!!!
