Title: 2009 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragonboat Festival
Post by: DBWTim on June 16, 2009, 01:36:57 PM
Since everyone's been dying to see when and who they are racing this weekend, we managed to get our hands on the race grid this afternoon.

If you have a PDF reader, you can see it here (http://dragonboatbc.ca/docs/2009/AlcanFestival2009_GridV3.pdf).

Teams should probably check their website for the latest race grid in case there's any revisions or corrections.

*REVISED to direct to Version 3 - June 19, 2009*

Anyone care to make predictions?

Is anyone aware on how rankings are being done for the Sunday Semi's?

It's pretty obvious that the 12 crews that win their opening race are straight into Comp A-C, but how are the rankings for the next 12 boats that qualify for Comp A-C done?

Point system or time?

If it is a point system does anyone know what points are awarded for each placing.

Thanks.

PS. and yes, I did read the rules & regs on in RTADBF website and they don't answer my question.

In your opening heat, if you place anywhere from 2nd to 7th you will still be eligible to make the competitive division.  Then the top 12 ranked teams out of the 10 "qualifying" heats will advance back up to the competitive division.  According to the race grids this is going to be done by points then by time.  As to how the points are exactly distributed I'm not sure but clearly your finishing in your 1st and 2nd heat is taken into account.

Well in the advancements for the second set of races it indicates the following:

"Top 12 teams in Recreational Division (based on points then time) to Competitive
A/B/C semi finals; next 24 teams to Comp D/Rec A Semi Finals; next 36 teams to Rec B/C Semi
Finals; bottom 10 to Rec D/E Semi Finals"

It says based on points then time.  That to me answers your question, yes  :D?

Aaahhhh the fine print...

So, how does the point system work?  How many for 1st, 2nd & 3rd?

Title: Re: 2009 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragonboat Festival

In your opening heat, if you place anywhere from 2nd to 7th you will still be eligible to make the competitive division.  Then the top 12 ranked teams out of the 10 "qualifying" heats will advance back up to the competitive division.  According to the race grids this is going to be done by points then by time.  As to how the points are exactly distributed I'm not sure but clearly your finishing in your 1st and 2nd heat is taken into account.

Same as every year but to clear it up, you earn points (in your first two races) based on your placement (1st receives 10 points, 2nd - 8 points, 3rd - 7 points, etc) .  If the number of points is the same as another team then times are looked at.

The time is calculated as a differential from the average time in your heat (where the average is calculated by ignoring the fastest and slowest times in the race, adding the other times up and dividing by the number of boats).  Here is a simple example of the calculation:

 Placement      Time
      1st           1:00.0
      2nd          2:00.0
      3rd           3:00.0
      4th           4:00.0
      5th           5:00.0
      6th           6:00.0
      7th           7:00.0
      8th           8:00.0

We would ignore the 1st and 8th times and calculate the average from there, average time for a team in this race is (27 / 6 boats) = 4.50 minutes.  This means 2nd place is 2.5 minutes faster, 3rd is 1.5 minutes faster, etc than the average and 7th place is 2.5 minutes slower than the average.  The differential for each race is then added together to determine total time.  This is used in tie breaking situations only.

The reason differential is used because of the varying tides and thus you are being compared to how well you raced in your heat not against another race or another team (that raced 2 hours before you).  This basically means race as hard and fast as you can in each race as it can have an affect on where you end up.  Last year, there were some teams where the differential between making it into another division was .1 seconds.

Hope that helps.

I have a question though, there are some heats with 8 boats and some with 7.  Would the point system apply the same throughout?  Seems advantageous for teams with 7 boats since getting last would yield more points than getting last in a heat with 8...

Points are the same if there are 3 boats or 8 boats, 1st receives 10points, 2nd receives 8 points, etc.  It is advantageous, speaking from experience not really, if you were 7th in the first heat and 8th in the second heat that would give you 3 + 2 points which is 5 points, that will probably place you in the Rec D/E semis, if you did 7th and another 7th then you end up with 6 points which will probably end up in the Rec D/E semis (maybe the Rec B/C semis but if you really only beat one team out of the first two races do you want to be in that semi?).  This is probably where that team should be, if they only beat one team in the first heat and cannot beat another team then they probably will end up in the division they should be in.

We do watch and if there is a problem (i.e. steering mechanism failure etc then the judges have the discretion to award or remove points to properly place a team in the "right" division, has not happened yet but it is possible).

do we get points for gettings points?
if so, can we trade them in for a stuffed animals or perhaps more points?

Have awesome races everyone!!!

Dragon Warriors and LA Racing Dragons Black are racing in the same first heat.  That will be fun to watch.

Any idea who Jetstart is bringing over?

I predict FCRCC Worlds for the win by 1 boat length.  Kai will be close behind in 2nd.  Rest of the pack will be scattered throughout.

Yes that will be a tough heat :)  Space Dragons in the outside lane is actually a very strong team as well.  They are only seeded low because it is their first year at Alcan (I believe).

just wondering...

if you finish in comp A or B do you have to compete in the guts and glory? what if your team doesn't want to?

Optional of course... you don't even have to compete in Comp A if you make Comp A :)

Sounds like a pretty tough competitive heat for the FIRST race of ur team's day. The outcome should be interesting.

I predict FCRCC Worlds for the win by 1 boat length.  Kai will be close behind in 2nd.

Thats kinda contradicting hahaha

Only if your points are worth awarding points for if not we may have to take some points

Since Cathay Pacific is a sponsor, how abt trading the points in for flight tickets? lol

My rough predictions for COMP A only:

1) FCRCC Worlds
2) Kai
3) Pemberton / FCRCC B
4) Pemberton / FCRCC B
5 to 8 will be a toss up between
- lard
- masters
- WW
- magnum
- SIB
- Jetstart?

True at least for this season they are a no go for Alcan. Maybe they will regroup for next year.

Good luck to all teams, I will surely miss the comp 'A' finals but I'll be cheering on my big brother from the sidelines. Unless any comp teams are looking for a female paddler????

Title: Re: 2009 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragonboat Festival
Post by: LittleSchrodinger on June 17, 2009, 01:02:59 PM
Well, Magnum IS a bit short on female paddlers.

NFW, your prediction sounds about right. It's true that the lack of Gorging is abit of a disappointment, but we'll see if there'll be any sleeper hits.

I am really interested in seeing how the two teams from SF are going to do... Space Dragons and Dragon Warriors.. as well as how Portland Fire Dragons fit into the competitive scene at this year's Alcan. And of course... Hopefully us kids over at Magnum will do good too =]

Space Dragons is a team from Los Angeles not SF :)

Oops my bad! I should've edited my post.. but I wrote that before I went on their website haha. When do the American teams start arriving in Vancouver?

Title: Re: 2009 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragonboat Festival
Post by: Garbage Miles on June 17, 2009, 04:35:04 PM
In addition to Gorging Dragons, Bay Area Dragons (BAD) are not coming, and the Laoyam Eagles are not racing in the Adult division.

Maybe the most interesting result will be between Magnum vs Masters vs Sudden Impact.  They've raced against each other at least 2 times this year.

I'm more interested in Magnum Vs Master and Without Warning result, especially when sushi is involved.

Some paddlers today, more tomorrow, most on Friday.  There are practices for many non-Canadian teams set for Friday afternoon.

Since many have mentioned heat 10, and the DW vrs LARD battle... Anniemaniacs, from Portland, should not be left out of the discussion.  The USA teams will be well represented in that heat.

I am reading correctly, in that there are no open races, due to lack of entrants?

Uh, there's still an Open division according to the racegrid, with eight teams.

Got it.  A yet un-numbered heat listed between 43 & 44 (does that make it heat 43A?)

And a women's guts and glory at the end of day one, interesting!  That's a L-O-N-G day for those ladies arriving early on Saturday AM.

When money for sushi is involved, the motivation for winning always increases greatly hahahha

Wow, now that you mentioned it, its 4 american teams out of 8 duking it out on their first race...exciting!  :D

the Laoyam Eagles are not racing in the Adult division.

There's enough teens on Magnum to represent the youth lol

What happened to Gorgin Dragons?

What about Mauna Hale?

Title: Re: 2009 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragonboat Festival
Post by: KarenRobertsPDX on June 18, 2009, 08:07:08 AM
Mauna Hale is Mountain Home Canoe Club in Portland and do not "normally" enter dragon boat races as they technically are an OC team.  Every couple of years they enter Alcan - look back over the past six years or so.

Hello, my first post - I'm w/ the Space Dragons (Los Angeles).
We're stoked about the trip up to make our Alcan deput!

Thanks Mike (LARD) for the shout-outs in the thread.  Funny that we're traveling all the way to Vancouver just to end up racing against each other a bunch of times (Black/Red, Men, Women) :)!

We'll give our best to provide some heat from the initial outside lane assignments.  Look forward to meeting & racing w/ everyone ... and this fabled beer garden on Sunday afternoon.

Oh I heard abt that, I meant what about Mauna Hale as in what prevented them from coming this year specifically? lack of oc paddlers to field a team, etc?  :D

There are quite a few Gorging paddlers still on the water in Victoria. Some are focusing on outrigger while others are just taking a summer to do other things. From what I've heard there may be a thrown together team in at least one festival this year and they will be back next year....

 Mens was :

 Kai
 FCRCC
Ohana ( I think this is how it was )

It was close between Kai and FCRCC and can't wait till tomorrow as it will be a nailbiter I'm sure .Fcrcc had a mishap during the race w/ 1 of our paddlers slipping off their seat and falling into the boat so we'll have to wait and see in tomorrows final .Kai has a very good team this year and has pulled in some great outside help ( some big names ) so it should be an awesome race if we can all stay in our seats ,lol

Now that another Alcan's come to an end, I'd to shout out to all the teams for the weekend full of racing. :D Congratulation to both FCRCC teams and Ika for putting up a dominant effort in the races pocketing the hardware. I also would like to give credit to Master of Dragonzone, Sudden Impact Black, Air Canada Jetstart, and Los Angeles Racing Dragons for their effort and competitive spirit. Although the competition field does end up being smaller this year than last year, it was still a blast racing nonetheless. (Admittedly, a certain heat and its need for multiple re-races was quite the delay on Saturday.)

Thanks!!

Wow.  Another great tournament!  Thanks to everyone that was involved in putting the festival together.  As usual, you guys did great!

Our caller was wearing a headcam during Guts & Glory.  Most of us watched the footage last night and it's simply amazing.  Phil wants to spice it up a bit before he releases it.

The footage is amazing - we aren't the fastest team in the world so there were boats all around - some passing us, ramming us, and some being overtaken by us.

It was a great Festival!
Although I did not get much (if any) of a chance to see it I thought it was a blast with some good racing and the chance to see old friends  (isn't that what its all about!)
Too busy Saturday to get the old Cannon out but managed to sneak it on the boats for some shots.
Sorry they are not as artistic and Kewl and Blizzy's (Awesome shots (and camera...drool)) but I do what I do with my broken camera (Thanks Tim.....Grrrr)
Enjoy!
Hope to be getting more shots in the next few festivals (I don't have to work those!Yeehaah, Beer garden here I come!)

Alcanranker posted the finish lines' view of the finals and Guts and Glory turn here: http://www.dragonboatwest.net/index.php?topic=5595.0

I'm still looking for a vid of Comp A that focuses on the entire race instead of just one single team. :D

Also, it was great racing against you and SIB, mustbecrazy. You guys were always tough to race against, so props to your team's tenacity. ;)

Nice capture with the photos you posted, LW!  What happened to your camera?

Ask DBtim........Grrrrrr...... :x

I am going to have to upgrade it anyways as I have had the workhorse for many years.
Its the best Sports Camera (IMHO) the Canon 1dMKII but I am eyeing the MKIII once I win the lottery or get a real job...LOL
It still works but I am finding since the "mishap" it is over exposing shots and am getting more OOF's despite any settings I try and while photoshop is nice (You Rock at that!) I am too damn lazy to edit them.....

Keep Shooting!

Here's my last video from the Alcan weekend.  It's the Women's 2000 metre guts and glory.  The video is split into two because Youtube only allows 10 minutes maximum.

Part 1 - Start of Race

Starting order:
Boat 1 - Wasabi Surge
Boat 2 - Dragon Ladies
Boat 3 - Wasabi Gang Green
Boat 4 - Extreme Curves
Boat 5 - Pemberton Women
Boat 6 - Wasabi Huge
Boat 7 - Wasabi Power
Boat 8 - FCRCC Women

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knqAHPSjlR4

Part 2

The results are based on total time to complete the race.  At about the 2:55 mark, you can see the Pemberton girl hang over the boat again, and this time it is a BUK.

1. FCRCC Women
2. Pemberton Women
3. Wasabi Power
4. Wasabi Gang Green
5. Wasabi Huge
6. Dragon Ladies
7. Extreme Curves
8. Wasabi Surge
