We're still looking for a few more volunteers to help out with the regatta on May 14th. We are especially in need of on-water referees and safety boat drivers, but also have some off-water positions available.
All volunteers will be provided with lunch and beverages throughout the day from
Tao Ti
.
Also, the first 25 volunteers to sign up will receive:
1) A free pair of glasses courtesy of
ClearlyContacts.ca
2) A $15 gift certificate to
Wild Rice Restaurant
To sign up please fill out this form:

Wow, amazing prizes!!! If this doesn't induce teams to sign up and race then nothing will.
Just one caveat. I'm all for rewarding the top teams (I wish I was on one of them), but having paddled for too many years I'm pretty sure rewarding the top 3 teams in each division is only going to lead to one thing... SANDBAGGING.
Given the quality of the prizes on offer, it's way too tempting for those teams outside of FCRCC, & One West to decide to just dog it in the qualifying/seeding races and increase/guarantee their chance of snagging an AWESOME prize.
Maybe, keep the prizes for the 1st three in the top division, then do random draws for the remainder. You could even give teams weighted number of tickets into the draw, i.e. the higher you finish overall the greater the chance to win (but you can only win once).
Otherwise, some of the races might take all day to run if you get multiple teams in the same race all trying to finish last.

Sandbagging breaks my heart. The Rec team I coach was going for their first and only Gold in Rec B division in Alcan one year, and a faster team found their way into that heat and took the cute lil paddle prize! They beat us by several boat lengths... haha
I agree with Top 3 in top heat + random

I thought about it, but really, I don't think sandbagging is going to be that big an issue. If it is, it'll be limited to a handful of teams at most.

Hate to burst your thought that they sandbagged but if you look at race 10 from last year they had issues with steering and never finished the race. This would have put them into the lowest division, after their race second race it was determined they would be too fast for the bottom division. The rules state that a team can be moved as determined by the officials. In this case the officials looked at the times of the second races and determined they should be in the division they ended up in for the semi final. There is only so much the officials can do when you have something like this happen. In addition, this team is from out of town so it is even harder to know exactly what they are capable of (for race officials).
Hope that clarifies that this team was not sandbagging and that there was a reason they were where they were.

Ooh. Interesting. I had heard that same thing on the day but thought it was a rumor. I hadn't bothered to look into it since my team was happy with their medal anyway. In the end we had a good time. I never really looked back on it til today. Thanks for the clarification.

I guess I should be responsible for posting the results for the Comp. mixed final, seeing as I stole the result sheet after the race
(Don't kill me Chairman Lamb!)
ClearlyContacts.ca Competitive Championship - 500m
1. One West - 1:57.280
2. FCRCC HP - 1:57.300
3. Starbucks Waverunners Komodo Dragon - 2:08.710
4. Sudden Impact Black - 2:09.960
5. Creakside Masters - 2:10.650
6. Tao Ti Phat Phish Racing - 2:13.120
Great day of racing by all (and I'm super thankful the weather didn't go as predicted). Great job to FCRCC for running a successful event, as well as getting such awesome sponsors + prizes!

That was some great racing. I think it is fantastic that One West beat FCRCC HP. It will drive both crews even more to do better next regatta. We are now looking to improve ourselves by learning what makes One West so good.
I think Starbucks have come a long way to be at the level they are here. I am looking forward to seeing them make a push for Comp A at Alcan. Well done!
It was very rewarding to be doing the men's race as well. I hope we can continue a trend, and have more men's races and teams in future regattas. I hope all the men that participated had a good time racing together.
Good day altogether.
