Wasabi Mixed Ends Bay Area Dragons' Streak, Extends Canadian Jinx at Northern California Championships

.
.
.

After holding off the two-time defending champion Bay Area Dragons in their Competitive “A” semi-final, Wasabi surged past the Dragon Warriors (San Francisco) in the last 50 meters of the Championship race, then withstood a late charge by San Diego Blue, TDBA – Draco Koa Akua (Tacoma) and Tempest (Toronto). Only two seconds separated the finishing times between the first and fifth-place finishers.

Tempest of Toronto was the only team from Canada to make the Competitive “A” final, but in finishing 4th, they extended Canada’s winning drought in the top racing class at the NCIDBC to eight years. Early favorites www.Roli.com (Vancouver) and BMO B2B Aggressive Dragons (Toronto) made the Competitive bracket, but failed to advance to the finals due to strong competition from California and the US Pacific Northwest.

Canadian teams fared better in the Competitive “B” Championships, which became a match-up between Canadian and Southern Californian teams. In another close finish decided by less than one second, the Vancouver-based Acme Dragons and Toronto’s Air Canada Jet Start topped the LA Racing Dragons Black and Killer Guppies Blue (Los Angeles) teams.

Toronto teams also factored highly in victories by Air Canada Jet Start/Zamboanga, BMO B2B Aggressive Dragons/Tempest and Air Canada/Zamboanga/BMO B2B in the CDBA Men’s, Women’s and Masters’ Championships.

Hey All,

I'm pretty new to this forum but thanks for creating what looks to be a pretty classy and cool place to talk DB.  I just posted an invitation to the San Francisco Dragon Boat races in the Tackboard forum area but wanted to extend the invitation here as well since  I'm not sure where the majority of eyeballs go around here.

We pride ourselves on putting on a paddlers race where things run on time and the starts and results are fair.  You can see from last year's results that the competition is top notch.  I would venture to say that last year's field was one of the deepest, toughest fields at a US festival ever.  So if you are looking for a good time, come on down !  We have an early registration special and excellent lodging deals.

For more race information and updates, please join our e-mail group for visiting teams by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

Race registration forms can be found at our web site at www.CDBA.org. Should you have any further questions, please drop me a line at [email protected]. I'll try to check back here periodically as well.

Happy Paddling

Hi Hans, welcome to the forums.

There's been talk on Roli of returning to San Fran this year. Since this is only my first year paddling with them, I can't comment on what happened in last year's race.  Hopefully this year will be the year that we'll end that 8-year Canadian jinx. I wouldn't be suprised if Acme returns this year either.

I've also heard rumors around False Creek that FODB might be skipping Kelowna to do San Fran..

Any other teams thinking of going down there? It would be big BIG National bragging rights to be the team that ends the NCIDBC Canadian Jinx..  well.. not really..  Very Happy

TD Lightning's probably going to send a team down to San Fran this year.    The vote between Montreal vs. San Fran seemed to favour San Fran.   Smile

It's definitely cheaper and the accommodations/shuttle buses are cool -- the water at Lake Merced might even be a shade worse than False Creek at low tide.   Eh??

Hey Chaos and Kibble !

It would be great to see you both down in SF.  Roli has been coming to our festival for many years (back when they used to be Canadian Airlines!) and Acme and the Concord Pacific Flying Dragons have come down a fair amount in recent years as well.

We would love to have TD and FODB come on down and join the mix as well !  The CDBA is excited that the SF festival is gaining a good reputation among competitive crews for good, solid competition and well tightly run races.   I'll confess that Lake Merced water isn't going to be bottled and sold for drinking water any time soon but at least the Lake serves as a great venue for dragon boating as there is little current and usually minimal wind.

As for other Canadian crews, my guess is that Jetstart from Toronto will come on out as they have for the past 6 years and Edmonton has expressed interest in sending another crew (last year was their first year - they paddled as the Canadian Beavers) ... several other crews have mentioned interest but it seems that plans usually come together later in the season.  I'll keep you all posted.

Unfortunately my team, the Dragon Warriors, won't be at Vancouver this year since we are heading to Malaysia instead but we are planning to get our Canadian fix in at Victoria !

Hope to see you on the water !

Acme's not likely to return this year but we recommend other local teams go.  Sorry Hans!  It's one of the best roadtrips you will ever go on and a great festival.  Remember the Road Rules - what happens on the road, stays on the road!!
