In 2016, Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival in Vancouver will be making a change to the composition rule for mixed crews for Standard Boats (20 people).

The "new gender composition rule" that was voted in, by the IDBF and adopted by Dragon Boat Canada.  The new rule allows for the following:

Standard Boats (20 people) : Crews must contain a minimum of eight (8) and a maximum of ten (10) of each gender paddlers.

Small Boats (10 people): Crews shall be 4 to 6 of either gender.

I don't like the new rule, their is no flexibility, expecially for rec crews.   If you have 11 women and 9 guys, you would have to race with an empty seat while the women stands on the shore.   The old rule allowed flexibility for crews if they have more women or more men. If you don't think women are treated fairly, just say your crew can only race with a maximum of 10 men.

Splash Test Dragons, mixed adult team have raced with from as few as 4 men to up to 8 men - quite successfully by the way, against other mixed teams!
and this rule will rule us out!

and having said that, when we started, we had more men - at least 10 - where have all the men gone?

I think this would encourage small teams to have gender parity and spares.

Of gender categories, at IDBF, DBC and our own RTADBF, there has always been mixed, women and open. I know everyone I know calls the open race the men's race, but really it is any gender goes. For mixed teams that cannot get gender parity at festival, I guess they will start racing in the open category. And if there is enough open crews, festival organizer will create divisions and more medals (if you enjoy participation medals). On the other end of the scale, if there are enough open crews, they might even have an open division guts and glory.

Having said that about adult teams, it is the junior teams I am worried about. Most festival, if not all, in North America do not have a women's and open category races for juniors. There is only mixed, and unlike adults which may have greater mobility choosing a team, juniors are difficult to get teams going.

It is nice that we do try to stick to IDBF and DBC rules (with variance for local conditions) as it gives legitimacy to the sport.

With our recent announcement about the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival (RTDBF) - Mixed Composition Rule Change:

Standard Boats (20 people) : Crews must contain a minimum of eight (8) and a maximum of ten (10) of each gender paddlers.

Small Boats (10 people): Crews shall be 4 to 6 of either gender.

We have recognized that this rule change may impact local mixed teams. Thus, we will modify the IDBF and DBC rule to read as follows, for the RTDBF:

Standard Boats (20 people) : Crews must contain a minimum of ten (10) women and a maximum of ten (10) men.

Small Boats (10 people): Crews shall be 4 to 6 of either gender.

A mixed gender crew will be allowed to race with more than 10 women.
Eg. 12 women, 8 men or 14 women, 6 men.

**NOTE** teams that are qualifying/racing for any DBC or IDBF at any of our events, will need to adhere to mixed rules set forth by IDBF/DBC.

I hope I don't understand this correctly:
-IDBF introduces new rules requiring 10/10 male/female balance  presumably for gender equity or perceived political correctness....there must have been a huge groundswell of public opposition to the old minimum 8/8 rules which also offered gender equity and allowed the 4 remaining seats up for grabs by the best remaining paddlers whichever gender they may be...incidentally, I haven't noticed any groundswells in my neck of the woods (I wonder what they will do with their new rule when they have to reduce the numbers in a boat when the wind and waves blow up and they have to reduce the number of people in the boat to 16 for safety reasons as they did in Italy 2014)
-DBC adopts the new rules...presumably for the same reasons and to show allegiance to the brilliance known as the IDBF.
-Rio Tinto follows suit also presumably blinded by the brilliance.
-Puppy's latest epistle now indicates a variation to the rules by Rio-Tinto for max 10 men and a minimum of 10 (up to 20 women in a mixed boat) which gets us back into the same pickle of gender inequity that we started with way back at the IDBF.

I don't understand why they don't leave the local rules alone for teams not qualifying for IDBF races but then again I too may be blinded by the brilliance of our leadership!
