Feeling down from the Canucks' loss tonight?... Well, maybe you can distract yourself with the first update of the 2011 team ladder rankings! http://www.dragonboatwest.net/index.php?page=16As always, ranking aficionados can also check out the ladder browser to track the progress of their favourite team(s) on the ladder.

Ladder rankings have been updated with results from Alcan. (Sorry for the delay, had a bit of trouble uploading the data for the ladder browser.)

Thanks Bluestreak! Just wondering - how are these teams ranked? And... will the False Creek Women be up sometime? Thank you for doing this.

Yeah. I'm wondering the same thing. The rankings are not making a lot of sense as it would seem that teams who didn't race at Rio Tinto were dropped down to the bottom of the list regardless of their previous regatta performances.

It's pretty simple "if you beat a team above you, you take their spot".
@amanda - FCRCC HP Women is 56
@bambi - about 60 teams were added so a lot of teams are lower. Concord Pacific went from 20 to 49 and they raced at Alcan. Also you end up lower every time a team below you beats a team above you, so if you didn't race at Alcan then you'll be lower than you really are because you didn't get a chance to beat anyone. If you beat Concord Pacific at your next race you'll be 49 and they'll be 50 and then it will be up to date again.
No system is perfect, that's the way this one works, it's a ladder.

Jebus... thanks Rb. I can't believe I couldn't even find my own team. How are women's teams ranked in amongst the mixed? Just out of curiosity.
This ladder is fine, there really is no perfect system. Hell there really is no perfect race.

@Rb - How do DQs work into it? Red Fusion DQ'd in a race against Twisted Hips and Race Face which put them into the consolation race and the TH and Race Face were put into the championship race yet Red Fusion is higher in the standings?

I agree...there's no perfect system but it's good to understand how this ladder is put together and what the rankings mean.
Thanks for the explanation Rb!

I believe you have to beat the team before you get ahead of them. In the case of a DQ you did not really beat them racing thus a DQ is ignored. Could be be wrong but I believe that is what happens in this ladder system.

Our team appeared on the rankings in 2009, and has not been seen since, although we raced in 2010 and this year as well. Can anyone explain how a team gets listed on the ranking ladder in the first place, and how or why it would disappear when it is very much present in the NW race scene? Thanks!

Hi i would like to ask if you were able to put the team "Khmer Krom Dragons" on the 2011 rankings, we have been on the 2009 rankings but haven't appeared on this years or the 2010 rankings.

It took a while but the rankings have finally been updated with results from Nanaimo, Harrison, Victoria, Steveston, Penticton and Portland!
Thanks for your patience everyone.

While I'm sure we all appreciate the hard work that goes into these rankings there seems to be a couple placings that don't make sense. Somehow FCC HP2, Air Canada Jetstart and the GD's got bumped down the list by teams that they all beat. GD's beat Portland twice, Navy at least 3-4 times, the Animaniacs a couple times and Dragon hearts Ultimate at least once maybe twice and yet they are ranked below all of them. Air Canada Jetstart and FCC HP2 also beat most, if not all, of those teams as well.
Pehaps I'm missing something but the rankings don't seem to support what happened on the water...
