Hi everyone,
We're starting up the half marathon and learn to run 10K groups up again on Sat Jan 29 in Victoria, this is a great way to get ready for your dragon boat season.
Our target events: For the 10K group, we're aiming for the Times Colonist 10K on May 1 (
www.tc10k.ca) and for the half marathon group we'll be aiming for the North Olympic Discovery Half Marathon in Port Angeles on June 5 (
www.nodm.com), there are a couple more local options you can gear your half training too but the main group will be aiming for North Olympic as it's an excellent event.
The learn to run program is designed for the non-runner and will start of with very short periods of jogging interspersed with walking breaks building up to cover the 10km distance without walking although there is nothing wrong with walking! The half marathon program is also a run walk program starting pretty low and building distance.
This group provides an encouraging, non-competitive and supportive environment to help you meet your goals and become a fitter and stronger paddler/person. It is made up mostly of dragonboat paddlers along with various friends and family. All are welcome!
I challenge you to come and try out just one session to see how easy it is. We started this program quite a few years ago now and have seen people go on to run year round and even participate in half marathons and marathons.
We'll be starting Saturday January 29 at the Gorge Rowing and Paddling Centre at 9am. The Learn to Run 10K program has 3 runs a week for 13 weeks, you can join the group or run on your own for any sessions that you can't make (the rec centre programs only offer one group run, the rest are to be done on your own). The Half program is a 26 week program but we'll be starting part of the way in as we're assuming people participating in the program will already have some running experience. We'll start off with Monday and Thurs at 6pm and Sat at 9am until the start of April, then it will be Mon and Wed at 6pm and Sat at 9am although I can set up smaller sub-groups if the days don't work well for everyone. Locations will vary as we get underway. All session info will be e-mailed out weekly so if you can't make the run group times, you'll still know what the plan is for that day and can run at home.
If you are interested or would like more information, please let me know and I can add you to my e-mail list. Note my e-mail address has changed to
[email protected]. Remember you have nothing to lose in just coming out to try it but the benefits are enormous if you stick with it!
Please pass this to anyone you think would be interested, all are welcome!!! Get your friends and family in, you'll be more likely to stick with it!
I'll be sending out the programs closer to the start of the program as the e-mail list builds. In the meantime, if you have questions or want on the list, shoot me an e-mail!
Hope to see as many people out as possible!
