Just wondering what kind of representation the West will have at next summers national race offs in Welland. I'm pretty sure that Gorging is going and I remember hearing something about at least one other team from Vancouver thinking about it. Sooooo whos going? False Creek? Magnum?

Hopefully we can send a good stong contingent out east!

Hello,

Nice to hear that the name of Magnum is still remembered Smile

The team raced its last race last September in San Francisco. About half the paddlers are trying out for the 18-23 Canadian National team, others are trying out for the Premier Open/Mixed. And finally, the rest is doing other stuff.

Perhaps one day, we'll be back to paddle together again, just like great teams such as Gorging Dragons and DH Ultimate!

It would be nice to take Magnum out to Club Crews for sure. Is SIB making the trip again this year?

Magnum, you guys raced your last race?  That's unfortunate.  I was hoping the New Dragons could race against you guys at some point.  It would have been an epic battle of Canada's U23s.

Good luck with making the national team.  There are a few New Dragons trying out as well, and it will be an honour to race as one with you guys.  Go Canada!

Unfortunate indeed. That's what happens when 80% of the crew is under 23...not many chances to try out for the national team for that division, you're only that young for so long lol.

New Dragons can still race with the Magnum youngins now under the team name of One West (the U23 team) in the Nationals!

Welland is gonna be so much fun!  Thumbs up

I see.  Did Magnum disband because a large number of the paddlers want to focus on trying out for the national team?

I'm just a bit confused because I always thought it was encouraged to participate in a club team while trying out for the national team.  All of the New Dragons who are trying out for Team Canada are still on New Dragons.

Either way, we're looking forward to seeing you guys at Welland!  I hope you've booked accommodations.  They're filling up fast!!!

Focus was a primary reasoning behind it. Normally if less than 5-10 paddlers want to try out, I guess there's a reason not to retire the team.
However with about 16 or so paddlers trying out for U23 division, 3-4 for Premier, and others wanting to take a break since we havent stopped paddling since '09 (the loss in SF fueling our training), retiring Magnum was the most logical step.

O well, I guess you'll only see a few of the older Magnum guys in Welland  Winking Smiley

Ah, I see.

The New Dragons are in a different position.  Every year, we acquire a great number of athletes who have never paddled before (approximately half this year), so only a small number of experienced members try out for the national program.  We have 6 heading to the Vancouver selection camp this year.  If you're trying out for U23, you'll probably meet them!

Good luck in the tryouts!  Hopefully, Dragon Hearts will one day form another legendary U23 team.

Yeah it's just hard to have a constant renewal of paddlers within a team, with an age restraint like that because there's nothing in the west to facilitate such a thing like a University division.
Anyways, looking forward to those who are coming!   Very Happy
