LET'S ELECT VANCOUVER'S 1ST DRAGON BOAT MAYOR

Vision Vancouver Councillor Raymond Louie knows dragon boating. He knows it's important to Vancouver cultural, recreational, economic and environmental communities.

Raymond paddled with the Vancouver Sun team during the 1990's.

In 2003, Raymond was Canada's first dragon boat flag catcher along with Olympic gold medalist Lori Fung, when they participated in the first demonstration race for the inaugural Vancouver International Taiwanese Dragon Boat Race.

Raymond also helped the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Society stickhandle through bureaucracy to ensure the boats arrived on time for the Labour Day 2003 Festival during a Vancouver Ports strike.

"Motor-less Marina" are the words Raymond uses to describe the recreational benefits for False Creek's East Bay - East of the Cambie Street Bridge. He has also served as Co-Chair, Steering Committee for the redevelopment of Southeast False Creek.

Raymond is someone who can not only bring together voters from different political parties, but he also offers leadership that brings support from the multi-varied ethnic communities that define our city.

Raymond offers a clear vision of a city where no one is left behind, and a civic administration that is not only experienced, but also offers an opportunity to unite neighbourhoods, ethnic communities, and supporters from various political backgrounds in building a progressive and sustainable city.

Raymond offers the experience and knowledge with the City of Vancouver that he has demonstrated with his two terms on City Council and as serving as a Director of Metro Vancouver(GVRD) and TransLink.

It is an amazing opportunity to have the very real possibility to elect the first dragon boat Mayor of Vancouver.

Actually it was originally posted in Racer's Village. I moved it to General Chat, although I'm a little wary of political posts. As long as it remains civil, I will leave it open.

This is dragon boat related, and should be of interest to dragon boaters.

Raymond Louie has helped our dragon boat community.... with the introduction of Taiwanese Dragon Boats.

But he could do more.  So could all the other city councilors, and parks board commissioners.

At the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat manager and captains meeting, Festival Manager Ann Phelps specifically stated that 1) The Festival has never received any money from the City of Vancouver,  2) It's a civic election year in Vancouver and 3) ask your civic politicians to be more accountable for dragon boating.

Al De Genova, parks board commissioner, is being supported by skateboarders for Al's support of the skateboard park near North East False Creek at Quebec St., underneath the Georgia Viaduct.

If we, as a dragon boat community, support a dragon boat friendly mayoral candidate, and ask all politicians to be more accountable and knowledgable about dragon boating in Vancouver and specificially on False Creek, then it is a win-win for dragon boating in our community, and us as paddlers.

I agree.  This not the place to pull voters and tellling people to register and vote for him just because he paddled before.

I actually think that pullling water (whom I know casually throughout the years but not necessarily someone who speaks with her on a regular basis) and popcorn might be mistaken. The original posting did not come across to me as a means to influence those of us who come here to read all the goings on to vote for him. Some of us don't even live in the Vancouver area anyway. The fact that this forum has lots of topics that you can post about means even something about politics should/can be posted. If you don't want to get into it then please ignore it. We've seen lots of topics being posted on here and some of it not even paddling related so I think it is only fair to post what people want. If the moderators disagree they can always delete it anyway. At least they put it in the right category. (Take a hint Todd!  aka Gunghaggis Shocked  Razz) This is just my opinion of course and I mean no disrespect to anyone. Personally the fact that Ray Louie did paddle might help with promoting all paddling sports and might even get us some much needed funds to improve our waterways that seems to be lessening more and more as more developments in the area are taking place. It is a stretch I admit but please leave the unnecessary comments out. Thank you all.  Smile

Thanks Bernman...   Maybe I should have written...

"If you are interested in having a dragon boat mayor - please read.
If not... please ignore."

Awhile back, the topic about "The Island in False Creek" came up.  It was an informative and interesting discussion.  Paddlers were mad that a "permanent barge" was now blocking their paddling.
http://www.dragonboatwest.net/index.php?topic=3878.0

People asked "What can we do?"

Some voices gave links to the "public process", others suggested talking to the committees and city hall, one person drafted a letter.

Dragon boats in Vancouver doesn't happen in a vacuum.

I have been on race committees, attended and organized forum meetings, coaching and steering workshops, attended Dragon Boat Canada meetings, helped to start up the Vancouver Taiwanese Race, discussed issues with the IDBF vice-president for North America, and attended SEFC forums and presentations.

Race organizers have to deal with city hall in many ways.  By-laws, festival permits, VIP invitations, even tourism and economic impacts.  The Fraser Valley Dragon Boat Club has to deal with Harrison Hot Springs Village council.  Look at the issues that are happening in Calgary eg. "Calgary Needs Help" when the city did not renew the licence for the Alberta Dragon Boat Foundation.
http://www.dragonboatwest.net/index.php?topic=4867.0

It doesn't matter who the party or the person running for mayor is...
But that somebody "gets" dragon boats.

Raymond Louie just happens to be the only civic mayoral candidate I have ever seen on a dragon boat, or helped out dragon boat organizations.

I thought it would be fun, interesting and informative to let people know that we could have a "dragon boat mayor."

And give the links on how to become involved... to make it happen, if you choose to.

...just like coming to a team fundraiser - if you choose to.

I only wish we had someone like this to vote for in Calgary. We might not be in the mess we are if we did. Sad
