I've charged it and set it up, seems to be up to par. Haven't had it out on the boat yet. Have to now figure a way to strap it to the ****pit of my Huki.

Good deal, thanks again for the heads up!

Hey, why did my word get edited? Since when is c-ockpit a bad word?
[/quote]

what i do is i have a velcro strap that goes around my lower quad.  i then attach the forerunner the to strap.  that's the easiest way.

what kind of huki do you have?  I just got a v1x 2 weeks ago!

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to go with the duct tape as I've strapped it on my leg before but find having to look down bothersome, especially during a race. I'd rather be able to view it straight ahead.

My fiance and I both have V1-X's, bought them a year ago and love 'em. Mines bright yellow with orange and black graphics, his is the same but in blue and yellow, not hard to miss! We also have a Huki tandem, bright blue with yellow stripes. Look at what you can afford when you don't have kids!

We used to have a Hurricane but I wouldn't trade my Huki for any other, durable, light and very well made. Now only if it could make me a faster paddler. Love it in the chop and waves.

Cheers

does any of you that have gotten the Garmin have rebate problems?  the form is asking for a 9 digit serial number and the back of my GPS only shows 8.

I noticed on mine, the top scroll button on the right hand side needs to be pressed VERY hard to get it moving... does any of you have problems?

Does anyone with a Garmin Forerunner 305 have the same problem that I do?... I notice that when my Timer is on, my pace is at 0 (I am NOT moving) but my Distance still continues counting and increasing in distance.  If I am not moving, shouldn't my Distance recorder stop and stay still where it is at (ie. if I was walking or paddling a 500m practice and I come to a complete dead stop at 200m, should it still continue to measure distance or stay still at 200m until I start moving again to continue the recording of Distance?)  The one I got will continue to keep going even if I am not moving anymore as long as the Timer is on.  But if I STOP the Timer, then the Distance will not move anymore.

Is there something wrong with my GPS - I am not familiar with GPS systems.

Received an email from Garmin:

Great question on the serial numbers. We are in transition right now and some of the units have 8 and some have 9. Please insert your 8 digit and your request will be processed.

Thank you

There are some reasonably good prices on e-bay for brand new units.

Costco has one for $259.99 which includes shipping.  Other places are still $300+.  Not sure if rebate is still valid.

$239.99 here --->  http://www.gpscity.ca/frun305  though i have no idea how much shipping is... might be cheaper, might not.

so far i really love this unit.  i find with running i utilize more of its features as opposed to paddling, but its still an excellent unit for paddling.  If you plan on only using it for paddling, you'll *Probably* have no need for the HRM, so just get the cheaper 205 (just my opinion, i don't use the HRM for paddling)

A quick comparison of this unit versus my old 201 unit

Pros
- fully programmable workouts on your computer, trasnferred to your GPS via USB connection (saves TONS of time and is 100% more functional)
- you can carry a list of "generic workouts", and you can also program them according to a calendar
- USB connection (vs old serial connection on x01 series, which was useless on modern computers)
- ability to download data and results from gps, tracking progress (same as before, but made easier due to above mentioned item)
- smaller "footprint"
- wireless HRM (the runner in me loves this)

Cons
- while smaller "footprint", the GPS Antenna is wrapped around your wrist, with the bulk of it proximal to your body.  not a big deal, but it does tend to angle the LCD slightly such that you have to rotate your wrist towards your face in order to read it.  a minor annoyance really.
- startup satellite acquisition time seems slower than on the x01 series.  once acquired its smooth sailing, but it takes much longer than i'd expect sometimes (3-4 minutes vs. 1-2 minutes on the x01 series).  Again this is at startup only so its a minor detail as often you'd use this time to warm-up and/or stretch, but it does mean you can't simply "startup-and-go".  I'm not certain if that is a byproduct of the antenna design or perhaps the firmware of the unit.

Both of those cons are really minor, but the pros are HUGE improvements over my previous unit.  Was definitely worth the purchase.

On a side note, the customizable target zones are awesome... but ruthless!  you go too fast or slow and this thing just screams at you!  My pacing has gotten much more consistent since i got this thing.
