The effortless rhythm of 20 paddles slipping in and out of the water at the same time, synchronized with the hollow thump of a drum -- most Vancouverites know those sounds mean the dragon boats are plying the murky waters of False Creek once again.

This weekend's Alcan Dragon Boat Festival marks the 19th year of the often-boisterous event, which is expecting close to 5,000 paddlers from 180 teams -- a far cry from the 22 crews that took part in the inaugural festival in 1989.
