Vancouver, B.C. - An approaching world dragon boat race cranked up the level of competition of this year’s Alcan Dragon Boat Festival in Vancouver this past weekend.
Several of the top finishers in the hard-fought Competitive A Championship have been preparing for the Club Crew World Championship in Toronto in August.
"The top teams have been training hard and this really showed out on the water this weekend," said Race Director Greg Lamb. "Times were close; the teams were in good form."
This year's Festival drew about 80,000 visitors over the two days - down slightly from last year.
"The weather took a bite out of our attendance for Saturday," said Anita Webster, Media Relations Director for the Festival. "Talking to the paddlers they didn't seem to mind. They keep saying it's a water sport anyway."
Attendance was back up again Sunday with a full site and ideal conditions for paddling and for festival-going.
This is the the dragon boat festival's 18th year in Vancouver. This year 173 teams took part in the event.
