This concern affects a rather small, but dedicated band of paddlers... Seniors (55+).

You will notice that the Championship round of heats begins with Junior D Final at 11:51, finishing with Women's championship at 4:15.

The only exception is the Senior's Cup. We (6 boats) get to race at 8:00 AM; before the Semis. This early time ensures that there is no audience, announcer or just about anyone else, to watch us.

Same thing happened last year. The gates to the public did not open until 8:00 AM, so even the few family and friends that we could con to get up early, couldn't get on the race site in time.

Could anyone out there enlighten me as to why the Seniors are separated from the other Championship rounds?

i remember hearing the same complaint last year, and i'm surprised that they haven't done anything about it.

Never give a match up halfway through. Never say that you do not feel up to it, that your condition is bad, and throw in the towel. Fight to the very end, always looking for your chance to break through.

I heard that the seniors specifically asked to have it early as they did not like having it at 5PM on Saturdays and they did not want it before the finals on Sunday.  I would have thought late Saturday but maybe that was too late for some of the tehm (for whatever reason).  Guess you can't please everyone.

I agree. It would be great to have people there to cheer the "Seniors" on. There are  6 teams of people over 55 who are still energetic enough to train just as hard, or even harder than the other teams, and they all deserve to be applauded for their effort.

Here is an update for "ADBF". "the seniors" do not exist as a monolithic group.
I have paddled in Alcan for 5 years for 2 Senior teams. In all that time, I never recall being asked " should we  paddle in the crappiest time slot possible?" (after 4 PM Saturday for 2002,3,4 and 8 AM Sunday for 2005,6).
In any case, the time allocated for the Premier Senior event precludes any audience (public gates open at 8:00 AM) and the Skytrain (first train arrives at 7:41 AM)

So again, 6 Senior teams will be racing in front of an audience of seagulls.

However, we hope to take up every close parking spot

That is why not too many teams are talking highly about Alcan. They all like the smaller festivals.

Oldtimer,

Your grammar is a little off (aka BAD) but I think you are trying to say that you are not happy.  Again from what I heard seniors wanted it not at the end of the day and not before their finals.  If you look back over the years, the specialty races were always held at the end of Saturday so it looks like Alcan listened to the seniors and moved it for them.  I guess it is hard to please you though, maybe they should schedule it just before your final, would you be happy then?  Regardless of a time, I don't think you or someone else will be happy so just consider it lucky you get an extra race (or 2 in fact) most of us don't.

ADBF - His concern is legitimate and he is entitled to his opinion.  As for your comment regarding his grammar, yours leaves much to be desired.

I believe the issue isn't about having it early...but making it easier for family and friends to watch a championship race...
