Joining Dr. McKenzie as nominees for the lifetime achievement award were Slava Corn, Vice President of the International Gymnastic Federation Executive Committee and Hardy Fink also from the International Gymnastics Federation.
Dr. McKenzie has volunteered as sprint canoekayak national team physician for 25 years. Currently he is chair of the International Canoe Federation’s Medical Committee. In addition, “Dr. Don” was the leader in initiating breast cancer survivors’ Dragonboat team paddling in Vancouver. The idea quickly gained popularity across Canada as a means to provide emotional support through paddling as a team in a dragonboat.
Congratulations to Dr. McKenzie, Canada’s Sport Volunteer of the year for 2005 and the other finalists that were nominated by CanoeKayak Canada; Karen Furneaux for Female Athlete of the Year, Adam van Koeverden for Male Athlete of the Year, and Mazda Canada for the National Team Support Award. CanoeKayak Canada is fortunate to have the support and participation of all four nominees in its quest to be “Bigger and Better by 2012”
