Anybody remember/have that great little humour item about the evolution of a paddler? i.e. the year-by-year progression (first year you know F-A, second year you know it all, third year you aren't so sure you know it all, that kind of thing...)

If you have it, would you post again please? thank you!!

It is like many sports in that it is relatively easy to get to an intermediate level, but to make that next step takes years. That statement reminds me of the evolution of people perspective of their abilities. In most cases it seems to look like this:

Start of first year: I know nothing
Start of second year: I know everything and I feel compelled to impart my supreme knowledge to anyone who will stand still long enough to listen.
Start of third year: I still know everything, but I am getting a strange spidey sense type tingling that there might be more to this paddle thing.
Start of fourth year: I don't know %$^. I never knew $%^, what the heck have I been doing. I apologize to everyone I annoyed and messed up over the past two years.
Start of year five and on: I know enough to know what I don't know and am working towards fixing that. I provide input and suggestions when asked only.

Spacey and Chaotic,

What year are you in?

Being only out of highschool, I would fit into the 1st or 2nd year  Laughing

Unfortunately they don't have anything after 5 so I guess you are all know it alls now  Shocked

Just kidding of course.

I find after 5 years that a paddler is pretty set in their ways, can you think of any like that Razz

Okay time to go have another Shirley Temple (cause I am not old enough to drink yet)   Wink

Apparently you should go back to whatever high school you graduated from and sue them for failure to provide adequate education for a sustainable living. You seriously don't know your subraction... would it be easier for you if we brought out an abacus? And it clearly states that "Start of year five and on:", so I'm guessing your reading skills are a little rough too.

Oh.. that's right.. you can't... cuz it burnt down along with the rest of Vancouver in the fire of 1886...  Smak upside the head

I have to kind of agree with you though. Many five year paddlers have developed so many habits that it is hard to change their ways.  It's kinda like the whole, "If it ain't broken, why fix it?"-thinking. Like they are thinking, "I managed to do well paddling the way I paddle, why do I need to change?"

However, if the paddler is willing to improve and develop as a paddler then they will always keep an open mind and work hard to try new things. Who knows, this sport is always changing and a good paddler should always be adaptable to different situations... *cough*like paddling in Gemini's*cough*

You are right, I missed those one syllable words "and on".  At my high school we were only allowed to use words with two or more syllables  Laughing

Actually I only skim your posts for the important stuff so I miss the fine print  Wink

Did Vancouver burn down in 1886, we were never taught that in our history lessons (in high school).  Geez another reason why we need a better education system  Shocked , oops off topic.

I agree some paddlers are more coachable than others.  The uncoachables are just that and everyone knows who they are except for the uncoachables themselves  8) .

start of year seven:  coach 13 teams at the same time while whipping people with "land practice", gets pwned in beer gardens, and talk too loud,

ps: spend too much time in this particular sport Laughing

When does this paddling curve flatten out?  The more I paddle the less I know?  At this rate I'll be sitting on shore with a beer in hand wondering what this sport is all about.    Stern Smiley
