Visitors to Shuttle between Shoreline Sites and Floating City at Sea Vancouver, July 6 to 10, 2005

Tall Ships Set Sail from Ports as Far Away as Russia, New Zealand and  Mexico

VANCOUVER, April 27 /CNW/ - Organizers of Vancouver's new West-Coast style maritime fun festival, Sea Vancouver, will create North America's first "floating city" in the waters off English Bay where tall ship enthusiasts can view the extraordinary vessels up close.

    Tall Ship Island

Called Tall Ship Island, the floating city is a series of barges and floats that will be anchored in the middle of English Bay. While a large number of ships will be available for public viewing at docks and marinas in False Creek and English Bay, the floating city will be the temporary home port for a number of the festival's sailing ships that are too tall to sail under the downtown bridges. From throughout English Bay and False Creek, Sea Vancouver shuttles will transport more than 1,000 visitors per hour to Tall Ship Island to take in the magnificent sailing vessels.

    Shoreline Sites

Two primary entertainment sites along the city's shores will be the main bases of operations for the majority of land and water-based entertainment during Sea Vancouver.

The Edgewater Site encompasses the False Creek area including Plaza of Nations, Concord Pacific Place and Creekside Park (beside Science World).

Here, visitors will enjoy:
      -  Headliner concert stage
      -  On and off water boat show and boat swap
      -  On water demonstrations (water skiing and wakeboarding)
      -  Flat water races and regattas(kayaking, outriggers, dragon boats and canoes)
      -  Edgewater Casino

The Maritime Point site includes Kits Beach Park and Vanier Park, as well as the Maritime Museum and features:
      -  Performances of Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore performed by UBC music department and the Vancouver Opera Orchestra
      -  Beach Bocce
      -  Exhibitions about Vancouver's multicultural nautical history; the exhibition is co-produced with Explorasia Society
      -  First Nations displays and traditional canoe carving
      -  Tall ship viewing
      -  The Small Ship Challenge (exhibition and racing of model ships)

    Other Sea Vancouver locations include:
      -  Granville Island / False Creek fishing dock: tall ship viewing and entertainment
      -  Jericho Beach Park: tall ship viewing

Tall Ships Hoist Sail for Vancouver

Every three years (in 2005, 2008 and 2011) the Sea Vancouver TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE(R) will anchor in Vancouver's harbours during the Sea Vancouver Festival. The TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE(R) is an annual series of sail training races, rallies, cruises and port festivals organized by the American Sail Training Association (ASTA) in conjunction with host ports in the US and Canada. The goal of the series is to promote and support education under sail opportunities for the young and the young at heart.

The Sea Vancouver TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE(R) 2005 is expected to attract as many as 400,000 visitors to the water's edge this year. To herald the ships' arrival, thousands will line the shores to welcome the fleet as it sails into the city during the Parade of Sail on July 7, 2005.

Majestic vessels will navigate their way from ports around the world,
including Russia, Mexico, New Zealand, the United States and Canada. Vancouver will also welcome the Canadian Navy sail training vessel, HMCS Oriole. English Bay, False Creek, Kitsilano Beach and Jericho Beach are among the prime viewing spots.

Among the list of invited vessels are:
      -  Bill of Rights, 136' gaff rigged topsail schooner (USA)
      -  Cuauhtemoc, 290' barque, Class A navy sail training vessel (Mexico)
      -  HMCS Oriole, 102' navy sail training vessel (Canada)
      -  Lady Washington, 112' Class A, Div. II brig (USA)
      -  Lynx, 94' square topsail schooner (USA)
      -  Master, 85' (Canada)
      -  Munin, 30' replica Viking ship (Canada)
      -  North Star of Herschel Island, 78' (Canada)
      -  Pallada, 356' full rigged Class A Brig (Russia)
      -  R. Tucker Thompson, 88' gaff rigged schooner (New Zealand)
      -  Talofa, 97' (USA)
      -  Suva, 63' (USA)
      -  Zodiac, 127' (USA)

Accompanying the fleet will be two British Columbian heritage vessels:
      -  Sea Lion
      -  SS Master

    Community Support for Sea Vancouver

Along with the almost $500,000 in financing providing by Heritage Canada and the City of Vancouver, Sea Vancouver has found enthusiastic support among the local business community. Edgewater Casino and BC Lotteries Corporation will be the 2005 presenting sponsors. Other contributing sponsors include the Vancouver Port Authority, JJM Group, Concord Pacific, Vancouver International Airport Authority, Tourism Vancouver, Concert Properties and others.

Predictions are that the Sea Vancouver festival will generate as much as
$27.5 million in spin-off benefits for the city. Tickets go on sale May 1, 2005 at Ticketstonight.ca.

    Volunteers Invited to Climb Aboard

More than 1,000 individuals are needed as deck hands, dock crews, guides and event volunteers. For more information on Sea Vancouver or to volunteer, visit www.seavancouver.ca.

Here a description of how racing will be done for SeaVancouver...
Quote
Here are the race details as they stand today:

two day event (all teams will race both days) all teams start in one pool (i.e., no separate junior division or men's or women's division - this could change depending on number of teams entered and interest in other divisions) pool will be divided into racing divisions based on Saturday results; similar calibre teams will meet in semis and finals races will be between 200m and 2K, depending on number of teams entered and time allotted for races Proposed (but not finalized) race format:

Saturday
morning - 2 x 200m heats
afternoon - 500m heats
Sunday (divisions will be determined by awarding points on Saturday) morning - 500m semis afternoon - 2K finals (just like the Guts and Glory!) If registration is higher than anticipated, the 2K race could become a 500m or a 1K race.

Hi all,

SeaVancouver is the new signature event being supported by the City of Vancouver and the Government of Canada that will celebrate our city's cultural connection to the sea. This five day event (July 6-10, 2005) features boats of every size and description including the Tall Ships Challenge as well as a city-wide schedule of concerts, exhibitions, spontaneous acts of art, dance performances and much more. SeaVancouver offers our organization the opportunity to be part of a much bigger event and promote a new and exciting race opportunity.

The CIDBFS is proud to be involved in organizing the SeaVancouver Regatta which will take place on False Creek on Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10. On the Saturday, dragon boats will compete in a regatta where races are 200m, 500m and (depending on number of entries) 1000m. The winner of Saturday's regatta gets a FREE ENTRY for the 2006 Alcan Dragon Boat Festival in Vancouver. As well, there is a draw prize for all teams to win a half year team membership at Dragon Zone. On the Sunday, teams are invited to PULL A WATER SKIER. For every set number of seconds your team pulls the water skiier, you get an entry for a draw prize of $3000!! Hours on Saturday are tentatively scheduled for 9am to 4pm and on Sunday from 11am to 1pm.

Please email [email protected] if you would like to register for this new event.

Does anyone know if there will be a beer garden at the SeaFest races July 9-10?  My friends will only come if there is  Cheers  available.

On another note... who is entered???  I hear a couple of the top comp teams will be duelling it out for top spot again... always helps when there is money involved as the prize.

And on another note how does the whole 'pull a water skier' work?  Do you have to pull them up as well?

I don't think there's a beer garden scheduled for the SeaVancouver regatta - there never is a beer garden for the ADBF regatta.

Gung Haggis Fat Choy dragon boat team is looking into organizing another Apres-Paddle party on Sunday July 10th, courtesy of our sponsor The Roxy.

The event will most likely be a fundraiser for the Fraser Valley Dragon Boat Club who lost one six-sixteen boat due to the accident they had trailering the 2 boats back to Chilliwack from Alcan Races on the Sunday night.  Although insurance may cover the boat - there are still deductibles and other costs involved.

San Francisco Dragon Warriors, and Portland based Wasabi Paddling Club sent me e-mails thanking us for the June 19th Apres-Paddling party at The Roxy, and said they all had a great time.

We'll look into getting a 25% discount for going to Doolin's Irish Pub for eats following the races.  The Lambshank is pretty awesome.

Just heard over the weekend that the On water demonstrations (water skiing and wakeboarding) portion of the festival has been dropped.  This includes the pulling a water skier event for the dragon boats.  Apparently the fecal coliform count has hit about 600 or so and that pretty much scared away the performers.

For those that don't know... Swimming beaches are routinely closed at 200. I believe the coliform count last year was about 500. Here some info from the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation news release regarding last year's coliform count:

Quote
Coliform enters False Creek from old combined sewer outfalls (CSO) that allow raw sewage to mix with runoff during periods of high rainfall.

Quote
The presence of coliform bacteria in aquatic environments indicates that the water has been contaminated with human or animal fecal material. Source water may also be contaminated by pathogens or disease producing bacteria including typhoid fever, viral and bacterial gastroenteritis and hepatitis A. The presence of fecal contamination is an indicator that a potential health risk exists for individuals exposed to this water.

Maybe the water skiing part should be moved over to the Kits Point/Maritime Museum site for Sea Vancouver.  The coliform count is much lower in English Bay.   English Bay is great for paddling outrigger.  We took a dragon boat out there back in the old days and waves broke over our gunnels!  Very exciting!
Imagine a dragon boat pulling a water skier past Kits Beach!

Updates for Sea Vancouver July 9/10:
Races are being run out of Dragon Zone (same as for ADBF regatta and Alcan Dragon Boat Festval) Wristbands are needed to access the site - I am waiting to find out where and when you can pick them up Saturday - races are still scheduled to run from 9am to 4pm and they may be interspersed with war canoe races Sunday - was scheduled for 11am-1pm, but will most likely run closer to 3 hours (i am not sure if this means a 10am start or a 2pm finish). Teams will NOT be pulling a water skier because the water ski clubs will not allow their water skiers to hang out in false creek with the coliform - hey, we hang out in false creek and we're (mostly) ok Smile  We are looking at other options for the Sunday, but the concept of earning entries into the draw is still the goal. more details as they are finalized.
Please hand in an ADBF Adult Team waiver (online at www.adbf.com under Race Info Docs) before your first race on Saturday Race grid will hopefully be out tomorrow (Wed) but may not be out till Thursday. all teams will have their first heat between 9am and 11:30am Team tents will not be supplied. Other Sea Van events will be running simultaneously (some may even be run out of Dragon Zone) and there may not be room for your own tents either. bring them if you like, but there is no guarantee on space
34 teams have entered
heats will be 4 boats - either 6/16 or gemini same rules and regulations apply as for ADBF Parking - each team gets one parking pass for the area known as “Indy Lane” - the entrance is on Pacific Avenue at Carroll St. Carroll is on the left, the entrance is on the right. Please watch for signs that say “Pass Parking”. Other (limited) free parking can be found on Pacific Avenue (north of the site) or along 1st Avenue near the Pass Parking area. If you park in a pay lot, please ensure that you buy a ticket for the entire time you are onsite. Do not leave any valuables in your cars Entry to Site - each team member will get a wristband that must be worn to get on site on Saturday and Sunday and must be worn in race marshalling area. DO NOT LOSE THESE!! Extra wristbands are limited and cost $15 each to replace

Updates to follow tomorrow or Thursday.

Okay, I've viewed the race grid and could someone please explain to me how it will be decided who wins this Festival when all the top teams will not be racing each other in the final?  Did I miss a page or something?  As far as I can make it out all top teams are racing in different final 250m races.  Is this event based on combined times Question

someone in the know and the way it works is that you earn points over the 3 races (the last race is a 500m not a 250m as you stated).  After all the races are complete the teams at the top with the same number of points will do a sudden death race or two (something about it depends on how many teams end up with the same points).

So in the end I would expect at least 3 teams to race off for the entry but who knows since there are combo teams in the mix.  I wonder which team will take the entry then, hmmmm  Surprised

Should be interesting to see how the teams react to the 3 different lengths, especially with the the 1000m having a turn in it (a mini guts & glory  Laughing ).

Thanks Tiger, knew I could count on you.  This Festival sounds like alot of fun, it's too bad only 30 some odd teams entered into it.  Hopefully the weather turns around soon.  Final race looks like it will have some top competition...very exciting!

Anybody know much about the Phillipine Youth Rowing?  I know they pulled out of Alcan at the last minute.  I heard that they're top level and that they're a men's crew, anyone?  Tiger?... Can't wait to see their paddling technique and stroke rate.

Hey Secret,

Contact says that the Phillipine team is not a whole team (only 10-12 paddlers) as the rest never got a visa to come.  I think they are forming with another team to paddle, guess which team and you can win a free avatar for DB West  Laughing
