Hometown boat rules the waves

Elaine Marshall

August 16, 2004

Teams came from all over North America to compete, but at Sunday's conclusion of the Dragon Boat Festival, it was the hometown paddlers that ruled the day.

After two days of racing on the Inner Harbour, 90 teams were whittled down to just five for the final race. Among the five were defending champs Kai Ikaika, a powerful team of paddlers from Portland and a longtime rival of Victoria's Gorging Dragons, also in the final. A second Victoria team, the Koi Dragonauts also made it through. With the late afternoon sun beating down on the water and the crowds cheering, the Gorging Dragons rose to the challange and paddled to a decisive victory.
