F2000, 6-16, Gemini .. doesn't really matter as long as there are 2 sets of boats.

Paddlers pay good money to race in festivals and deserve to race in decent boats.  Very few people that I am aware of enjoy racing in the geminis.  Do not accept that you have to use these defective boats just because they were irresponsibly purchased and are now sitting at the Vancouver clubs.  Since paddlers are putting up the money, paddlers should insist on good quality boats that are enjoyable to paddle, which for now means the 6-16s or f2000s.

I second what "Imposter" says above. We are being a blind follower by switching to these boats. All the European "standard" boats, whether 10-bench BUK or 11-bench GEMINI, have the same hull specifications and are both tippy and S-L-O-W. The general consensus is that these boats are slower by about 10 seconds in 500M, and roughly 30 seconds in 2000M, compared to the 6-16. It is ironic that the GEMINI's are 550lbs and the FASTER 6-16's are 1,000lbs.

I suspect the main reason that the GEMINI's were purchased is because some decision-makers (race committee?) are paddlers and wanted the boats for training before headed to competitons at venues that use these boats. They totally neglect that of the 180 teams that raced in Vancouver this year, probably only 5 -10 would travel and benefit from this. So we have 170 teams paying for, and suffering with, these slow boats so the other 5-10 teams can benefit. All we really need is just a couple of GEMINI's at Dragon Zone to rent to those few teams that want it. These boats should not be used in the festival; they turn MOST paddlers (even sponsors) off. Look at all the capsizes and swamping at New York.

As to our team, we paid the entry fee, shut up and paddled.....frustrated and not happy about it.....Boy, am I glad we can express freely in this forum Smile Now we have Kelowna to look forward to.....

Fyi, capsizes and swamping in NY is mainly due to the condition of the race course and lack of experience steers person.  It has nothing to do with the boats.

The BUK boats are actually a very well constructed dragonboat.  I must admit, the 10 seaters are a luxury compare to the Gemini's

It is true that the race conditions and the lack of expereinced steerspeople were partly responsible for the unique experience that was Liberty... but I have to really think that if 6-16's were used there would not be as many incidents.  The 6-16's are definately more stable and sit higher on the water than the BuK/Gemini's and with the conditions we saw on the Hudson, it would've been a better choice to go with 6-16's in a perfect world especially with the experience level of the majority of the steerspeople there. But since the boats used were from Montreal, it was just great that this festival even had boats to use. I'm not even sure where they would be to get 6-16's out East.

Also, the Canadian Nationals managed a 1:44 in the Buk's in their second 500m race so I would not consider these boats slow by any means. Of course that was with some help from the currents.

I agree with Moaner... the BuK's were great to paddle in.. when you're not sinking in them or bailing water out of them.
