Thought I'd share something that might affect every team participating in next year's Vancouver Festival.

As some of you know, Toronto has implemented the 10/10 rule in their race this year and from what I hear, ADBF may be putting it in for next year's (2005 Season) festival.

The 10/10 Rule, for those that don't know, states that all mixed adult teams must have 10 males paddlers and 10 female paddlers in the boat. For the past years in Alcan, teams only had to have a minimum of 8 female paddlers.

Overall, its a good rule change, not the least for the fact that there always seems to be a shortage of guys on alot of teams.

As mentioned in TO, the main problem is lack of consistancy between festivals.  Its difficult to set a crew for one 10/10 event, while all the other festivals maintain the 12/8 rule.  An attempt should be made to get all local festivals to make the change together.

I'm all for keeping the rules in line with the IDBF's.  Whatever they choose, so be it.  


If ADBF is planning on changing it *just* b/c of one festival in Toronto, well, that's dumb.  (is that the situation?  i don't know, just speculating)

i'd have to agree with spaceman.  we should follow whatever the rules are for IDBF.  many of the top teams strive to be able to make it to the clubs or worlds and to do that, they need to practice with the same group and seating positions for any festival.  

just because toronto is the center of the world (just kidding.....haha..) it doesn't mean that we should follow them....

The official rule from IDBF is minimum of 8 female paddlers.  There has been a push for 10/10 but everytime that motion has been shot down.

From what I've been told... Just because IDBF is the governing body, doesn't mean that they know best. There is a rule that says that all teams have to bang their drums during the race or else face a penalty, after all. And how does Montreal lose their 2004 Club Crew bid to Capetown? Montreal had an Olympic-level raceway, boats (they had to ship boats from Toronto for use in Capetown) and I'm pretty sure Montreal is a lot safer than South Africa...

Guess I'm just saying the just because the authority makes a decision, it doesn't necessarilly mean that it's always in the best interests of the paddlers... people shouldn't follow blindly like lemmings...

In regards to the 10/10 rule... it really doesn't matter since the rule will affect all teams... What'll happen is the weakest two guys on the boat will be replaced with women. As stated before, this shouldn't be too hard since the hard part for making a team these days is finding guys anyways.

I agree, Chaos.  I get tired hearing people say we should do something just because it's IDBF approved, etc. (ie: we got new boats with 11 rows instead of 10 because it's the IDBF spec...).  In some cases, standards make sense - like for paddles (although they bungled that one).  

In other cases, IDBF specs are not as relevant (such as for boats or paddler ratios).  The only time anyone will have contact with the IDBF would be a a world or club crew championship event - which means that for 99% of paddlers, IDBF specs don't matter.  

If it is a good rule, go with it.  Who can argue against equality?  As I mentioned before, the only issue may be for crews to have one line-up for Alcan and another for the other races.  However, if this is what it takes to implement change, then Alcan should take the initiative & lead the way.
