Hello

Did anyone here race in the Taiwanese Dragon Boat Races last year?  What did you think?  Was there any problems?  What could have been done better?  What should have been done?

Just wondering.   8)

Someone must have been in the race last year.  Any comments would be really helpful in improving this year's race.

My team competed in the Taiwanrese races last year.  You should be warned that you need to have a really long paddle since you're so high off the water.  Make sure your steersperson doesn't steer the boat directly over top of the buoy with the flag on it, b/c it will push the flag under water, and your drummer will not be able to grab it.  It was fun - that's all I can say!

It is a fun festival where you get to race different types of boats.  Teak, 6-16, Millenium, and Taiwanese boats.  

No real problems last year...but then again I guess the only problem was some teams entering specialty races, and wound up racing like 7 races in a day.  This year I think they are making it a 2 day event...but don't quote me on that.

Flag pulling was an interesting part of the Taiwanese Fest.  If it was a close race, it all comes down to who pulled the flag out first.

One other highlight are the prizes in the final races.  For example last year, Telus was the title sponsor in the B division race, and the first place team got a webcam each along with their medals.  I have to say though those medals do look bling!

Thank you for the comments.  I had hoped to get more comments on what you would like to see at this year's race.  What can we do to improve it?  We want to make this a good experience for the paddlers.

If you haven't figured it out by now, I am from the DBA and we would like your help to make it a better race.

I paddled with Eye of the Dragon at last year's Taiwanese Festival.  Personally I didn't like the paddling in the different boats but I'm guessing it's due to logistic reasons. It would've been nice to race in just the Taiwanese boats to give it more of a unique feeling since everyone and anyone has paddled in the 6-16's and to some extent the teak's.

Maybe we could have a racer's village since most of the teams were huddled around the marshalling area and the porta-potties in front what used to be Mavericks (I still can't recall what it's called now...).

In regards to the actual races and marshalling, I don't really recall anything that sticks out...

I agree with Nakano though, the medals were pretty nice...

We have 49" paddles which we provide.

You should have a separate "flag grabber".

Maybe we could have a racer's village since most of the teams were huddled around the marshalling area and the porta-potties in front what used to be Mavericks (I still can't recall what it's called now...).

We will have a racer's village this year.  I believe it will be in the area west of the pier but east of Cooper's Park.

We will have medals again this year as well as other prizes.
