Race grid? Predictions? http://dragonboatbc.ca/race/participating-teams/ (http://dragonboatbc.ca/race/participating-teams/) Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: Paddlebunny on June 07, 2011, 10:21:33 PM Top 12- It starts with FCRCC and ends with Phat Phish
How many boats in a heat? Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: redlancer on June 07, 2011, 10:59:54 PM Way too easy to pick FCRCC so I'm going with the upset.
1. One West 2. FCRCC HP 3. Kai Ikaika 4. Air Canada Jetstart 5. FCRCC HP 2 6. Gorging Dragons 7. Pemberton Bald Eagles 8. Tao Ti Phat Phish Also challenging: Starbucks Waverunners Komodo, Creakside Masters, Lotus Mixed, and DH Ultimate Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: Paddlebunny on June 07, 2011, 11:05:42 PM Don't forget about LARD , Space Dragons from Long Beach were good in the past (if it's the same team)
Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: redlancer on June 07, 2011, 11:06:23 PM Add Sudden Impact Black and one of the LA Racing teams to that list of challengers.
Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: Mike on June 08, 2011, 08:16:37 AM Top 12- It starts with FCRCC and ends with Phat Phish How many boats in a heat? 8 boats in a heat. Don't forget about LARD , Space Dragons from Long Beach were good in the past (if it's the same team) LARD isn't fielding a full team. I believe Space Dragons are also pairing up with Ripple Effect from San Francisco so they aren't their full team either. The change in the race dates has made it hard for a lot of our paddlers to commit this year. Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: paddlecwazy on June 08, 2011, 09:03:19 AM I don't normally make predictions till I see the grid, so I reserve the right to change this:
1. FCRCC I 2. One West 3. Kai Ikaika 4. FCRCC II 5. Gorging Dragons 6. Pemberton Bald Eagles 7. Air Canada JetStart 8. Starbucks Komodo Next 10 will include (in approximate rough order): Lotus Mixed, Creakside Masters, Space Dragons, LARD (one of them), Sudden Impact Black, Dragon Hearts Ultimate, Anniemaniacs, Oil City Crew, Blu By U, & VO2Max Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: mappingguy on June 08, 2011, 10:48:55 AM Div A
1. FCRCC HP (first place only if Kami is in the boat, second behind One West if she is not) 2. One West (If they have some One East paddlers...they will take first place) 3. Air Canada Jetstart 4. FCRCC HP 2 5. Gorging Dragons 6. KAI IKAIKA (Most likely will take 3rd place, but I hoping the top 5 will be canadian teams :P) 7. Pemberton Bald Eagles 8. Dragon Hearts Ultimate (They've been pretty quiet this year...but definately can't be overlooked) Div B 1. Starbucks Waverunners Komodo (They've been kicking butt this year...but they will need to stay composed in the later part of festival to do well against the more experienced teams) 2. L.A. Racing Dragons Gilda (I'm assuming this is LARD BLACK?) 3. Creakside Masters (Never underestimate experience. This team sticks together when all hell breaks loose on the water. Experience will always win over brut strenght in this sport) 4. Tao Ti Phat Phish Racing (Are they spiking the tea this year? They beat Komodo at the last Regatta.) 5. San Francisco Dragon Warriors 6. Sudden Impact Black (I think they've been rebuilding their team...but hopefuly be able to pull it all together this weekend) 7. Team LifeScan (My favorite team...they've stuck together for over 10 years with the pretty much the same group) 8. One Apparel RGL United Div C Anyones guess....Space Dragons, Anniemaniacs, Blu By U, Swordfish, VO2Max, Eye of the Dragon, Cathay Pacific Paddlers, Oil City Crew Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: vicpaddler on June 08, 2011, 11:00:47 AM Interesting to see Jetstart ranked so highly. They won Milton this year but there really wasn't much in the way of top competition there. (yes I know SRP was there but they got their butts handed to them in Pickering when the big boys showed up..)
Perhaps someone has inside information? Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: Mike on June 08, 2011, 12:50:50 PM There's no LARD Black or Red making an appearance this year :P
Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: mappingguy on June 08, 2011, 02:07:31 PM Is Lard Black and Red renamed as Guilda and Yolanda, respectively this year?
I guess it doesn't matter, LARD db shouldn't be taken likely anyways. They have a strong pool of db paddlers in LA. Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: Kai Paddler on June 08, 2011, 07:54:28 PM Looks like the race grid is up: http://dragonboatbc.ca/race/race-schedule-results/ (http://dragonboatbc.ca/race/race-schedule-results/)
Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: vicpaddler on June 08, 2011, 09:07:04 PM Who is CAL? They are entered in the mixed division and are ranked first for their heat and first in the visitors cup. (Provided that lane 4 is the top ranked team)

Thanks Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: Rob on June 08, 2011, 09:50:52 PM Looks like we will have to wait until Sunday to race your team Kai Paddler. Should be fun.
Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: huli_chuck on June 09, 2011, 07:46:08 AM Is Lard Black and Red renamed as Guilda and Yolanda, respectively this year? I guess it doesn't matter, LARD db shouldn't be taken likely anyways. They have a strong pool of db paddlers in LA. We've always registered two boats. But due to various reasons, quite a few of our paddlers can't go this year. We ended up with too many people for 1 boat and nowhere near enough for 2. So instead of stacking 1 boat, we are going with 2 even boats with sprinkles of guest paddlers from LA and Canada. It's going to be a rockin' good time! The goal is to have Chuck's Gilda beat Mike's Yolanda in the finals by 0.01 seconds in whichever division we end up in. Most likely no chance at G&G race though. :( Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: Mike on June 09, 2011, 08:43:47 AM I'm upset that Yolanda is seeded lower than Gilda. Clearly my boat is the better team!

Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: paddlecwazy on June 09, 2011, 09:00:51 AM Holy early start Batman!!!! I thought we made the women and the kiddies get up early and paddle the opening races?
At least we'll get to the beer tent before the women though. They always got the best seats in the past. Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: Kai Paddler on June 09, 2011, 09:10:48 AM Who's idea was it to race the open division in the Gemini's?
Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: alcanranker on June 09, 2011, 09:27:06 AM Who's idea was it to race the open division in the Gemini's? Luck of the boat draw Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: vicpaddler on June 09, 2011, 09:33:41 AM They really need to get rid of those Gemini's. They are simply an inferior boat. All the mods done haven't helped, in fact in a few ways they've made them worse. (look at the scraped legs coming out after a race.) I realize its costly to have a all BUK fleet but something should be done.
On a positive note, looks like a strong field this year. Should be a real battle just to make the Comp A final. Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: mappingguy on June 09, 2011, 09:49:52 AM I saw DZ grinding down the edges of the old seat positions last week.
Hopefully that will help, if not then it will be interesting to see how bloody the dock will be after each gemini race. :) All kidding aside...it's going to be a good weekend of racing! Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: ReachRotateRelease on June 09, 2011, 10:05:23 AM We could always lobby to bring back the Six Sixteens. hehe
Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: superduper on June 09, 2011, 11:48:07 AM If LARD has been evenly divided into two teams, then CAL may be the only California team that will make top 16. They came 2nd in last week's CDBA regatta, placing ahead of Dragon Warriors.
Also, there is no Comp C / D divisions this year. It's been switched back to Rec A / Rec A consolation instead. Who is CAL? They are entered in the mixed division and are ranked first for their heat and first in the visitors cup. (Provided that lane 4 is the top ranked team) Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: paddlecwazy on June 09, 2011, 12:13:24 PM No Comp C or Comp D?
That explains why it says only Top 19 rec go to Comp/Rec A (19 + 13 Comp teams = 32). Didn't think that was enough teams to make up the numbers for the categories we have been used to. I know plenty of paddlers who attach a status to being on a Comp team not a Rec team (falsely IMHO) who might be a little miffed to wind up in Rec A come Sunday afternoon. Should make for some interesting and very intense qualifying races and semi-finals. Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: rb on June 09, 2011, 01:22:56 PM Comp A 8 teams
Comp B 8 teams Comp C 8 teams Rec A 8 teams Total 32 teams. It looks like Comp A, B, C and Rec A will be the top 4 divisions (32 teams). Advancement will be determined on Saturday's racing. Sunday morning heats will advance 1st 2nd place to Comp A, 3rd 4th place to Comp B etc. What was Comp D is now Rec A, what was Rec A is now Rec B etc. Still the same competition just different names. Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: vicpaddler on June 09, 2011, 01:30:21 PM Is your placement on Sunday determined by points on Sat? If so does anyone know the breakdown?
Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: Kai Paddler on June 09, 2011, 01:43:04 PM It would also be nice to know how seeding/lane assignments are formulated for the finals
Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: paddlecwazy on June 09, 2011, 02:16:12 PM Comp A 8 teams Comp B 8 teams Comp C 8 teams Rec A 8 teams Total 32 teams. I'm going to guess its more like the following: Comp A - 8 teams Comp B - 8 teams Rec A - 8 teams Rec A consolation - 8 teams Either way doesn't matter to me. I don't care about medals or division names only overall placement in the regatta, and relative placement to the teams I measure my team against or would like to be measured against. Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: alcanranker on June 09, 2011, 04:46:18 PM Comp A - 8 teams (1st/2nd from Comp/Rec A semis)
Comp B - 8 teams (3rd/4th from Comp/Rec A semis) Rec A - 16 teams (5th thru 8th from Comp/Rec A semis) Rec B - 16 teams (1st thru 4th from Rec B/C semis) Rec C - 16 teams (5th thru 8th from Rec B/C semis) Rec D - 16 teams (1st/2nd/3rd and fastest 4th from Rec D/E/F semis) Rec E - 16 teams (all other 4ths/5th/6th and two fastest 7th from Rec D/E/F semis) Rec F - 8 teams (all other 7ths and 8ths from Rec D/E/F semis) Total= 104 teams Now you have all the info to plan your Sunday. Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: vicpaddler on June 09, 2011, 08:56:21 PM How are the top 32 teams determined on Sat? Obviously not all 32 will win both or even one of their races.

Definitely got those really competitive races that I desired and expected out of an Alcan Weekend. Speaking from the races I participated in, it was great to see such a close and tight Competitive A final. Top 5 teams all within 1.5 seconds of each other is just thrilling to hear and probably the closest final I've heard of in all my years at Alcan. My big congratulations goes to Absolute Sake for making their first Comp. A appearance at Alcan! Looking back at results, they've jumped a division every year and it's an awesome thing to see! the only "sh**ty" msn(:P) thing was the lack of porta potties near the marshalling area. i think it was stresssful for those nervous paddlers who HAVE to go before each race! i should also add that i really appreciated the fact that the organizers made arrangements for those cute little paddle plaques and a picture on the podium for those who won the specialty races. i hear we also get a 'party' at the granville island brewery (we won the GIB dragonzone race). how great is that?! this is a very nice change from last year when we got nada @ the festival. before i sign off, i was wondering how everyone feels about the changes they made in divisions (comp and rec levels) this year. do you think that where your team ended up accurately reflects your level of competitiveness? eg. should a team that finished in the top 25 or so be classified as a 'rec' team? i would like to see how others feel about this. anyway, thanks for a great weekend of racing and thank you to the volunteers and organizers who made this all happen. ps. and a special thank you to my team for giving a 110% with every race. i love you guys soooooo much!!! Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: fisherguy on June 14, 2011, 12:59:03 PM This year was one of the best that I've experienced. Perfect weather (no rain and not too hot). Like others have said, it was great not having to make that long walk from the other side of the creek to the marshalling area. Certainly did not miss the claustrophobic army tents. We brought two of our own and had lots of room. Liked not having to use the portapotties (Used the Community Centre ones). I thought the new finish area worked out ok despite my initial worries.
During the break between our races, some of us walked over to the little island near the start line and got a great view of the races. It was nice and relaxing sitting on a boulder watching the starts. Our championship race (rec C) was fairly competitive so I have no complaints. Didn't bring home any hardware but we did our best and had a good race. Yes I would also like to thank the tireless volunteers who make this race possible. Some of them have been with the festival for over 15 years. Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: huli_chuck on June 14, 2011, 01:33:42 PM Hope you prove the rankers wrong 8)) Done. Mike's boat beat Chuck's boat. Successful weekend? :) Well done, Mike. Next time, I'll make sure to strap a bungee cord to the bottom of your boat. ;) Just like all the previous years, I don't have any big complaints about festival. This race is always a great learning experience for everyone on my team. There's definitely a need for bathrooms around the marshalling area. And having port-a-potties inside the beer garden was sheer genius. Title: Re: 2011 Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival Post by: superduper on June 14, 2011, 04:54:13 PM HEAT 94 RESULTS - Cathay Pacific Airways Competitive A Championship
1st – L5/ 1:59.56/ FCRCC HP 2nd – L4/ 1:59.84/ One West 0.28 of a second. Might have been even closer if OneWest had a lighter drummer. :D j/k Good race. Fun to watch top teams race down to the wire. Proximity of racer's village to marshalling was perfect. Tents may have been an issue for teams that did not have their own. Overall, it worked because weather cooperated. I have no issues with the new naming of divisions. In fact, I prefer they drop Competitive, and just name the divisions from A, B, C etc. |
