Looks like the racing was pretty good for the time of year.  Can hardly wait for Alcan and beyond.

Interesting that Without Warning is a combo team.  Did they take the best from DWW and Ultimate?  I also heard that Without Warning is the DWW team that will be going to Calgary for the race offs.  Anybody confirm this?

Looks like an interesting season already.

if Without Warning is doing that, I would hope they steal people from DWW cause they were beat by them today.

The Sprint Regatta was fun!   It's a great way to start the season.  Hopefully this will be a new tradition for Vancouver dragon boating.

Wonderful that the sun came out.   8))  I was preparing for rain.  :(

Nice that ADBF/Dragon Zone was serving up hot dogs and had coffee, juices and pop available.  Even ADBF General Manager Ann Phelps was grilling the hot dogs.

A German Public Television crew from ZDF TV followed us at the regatta, doing a travelogue show about Vancouver.  The storyline is how dragon boat races and festivals encourage multiculturalism.  And that Vancouver is "leading edge" in Canada for cultural fusion.  They interviewed several team members and by coincidence, the "hapa" daughter of one of our mixed-ethnic couples, came to paddle with us on Saturday.

We are asking the ZDF TV producer for some of the 200m sprint race footage so that we can give to ADBF for promotional purposes, so hopefully you can see some of that soon.  The actual program will air in Germany later this year.

We even did an extra "demo" race with the C Finalists, with a cameraman in seat 1, and only 18 paddlers in a Gemini.  That was tippy.  When the cameraman stood up during the race for an overhead view, our drummer had to grab his jacket to help keep him from falling forward as the boat surged on each stroke.

The races this weekend were just a guage for everyone involved.Without Warning is the team going to Calgary this year and a great rep for the west this year.Give everyone a break it's only April.

If you were hoping to gauge your team against the FCRCC team don't bother because that wasn't the true A mixed crew but just a mix of whoever wanted to play  ............. good luck to everyone preparing for Calgary !!

FCRCC A or B or mixed it's still False Creek and that's a good guage for anyone.

What it shows you is actually how much work a team is going to need to do if you want to be at the top in Calgary .

There is definately a difference between this FCRCC crew and the top A crew ...... it would be considerable .Don't get me wrong though .......as you said any FCRCC team would  be tough

from the line ups of the two DWW crews, it looks like they might have "spread out their forces" as well.  perhaps something for False Creek to consider going into future races? ;)

actually DWW looked pretty strong at the sprints.  even though FCRCC came out on top it's only by a second.  now with that said... even without the top A team it's still a very interesting challenge.  a race is a race... it's anyone's game... don't underestimate the competition.

Way to represent FCRCC, Paddleboy!  Let everyone know we're unstoppable!  We'll beat everyone down with our mighty talking.  ok ok .. I kid.   :D

Results looked to be right for the distance.  I believe this was the first time 200m races were held in False Creek, except maybe back then when the world championships were here.  Someone can correct me here  ... it's been so long that I can't remember.  Looking at the results, there weren't many teams.  Only about 20 teams.  I would have expected more teams out, especially for short 200m.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh :shhh: ......... I'm trying to beat them down mentally too !! lol .....just kidding....in all fairness these posts are not mean't in a negative way .No matter what team your with train hard and give it everything you have and hope that it all comes together on the day you have been training so hard for .

A good tight race in Calgary would be awesome and I'm sure it will be ..........

a second is a long time in top level competition.
i agree with the last bit completely.  a race is a race, you duke it out with what you've brought to the "battle field"/race course.  saying "well if the top paddlers who COULD have made it were actually paddling, we would have won by more" makes about as much difference to the outcome of the races that have finished as one less grain of rice in the meal i had last week would make to how full i was at the end of the meal.  (used that example cause i'm hungry)

The shorter the race, the tighter the gap, nothing new here.

With the turnout and no shows, this race was probably too early, try for mid-May next year.  Otherwise it's an ideal season opener.

No one is knocked down mentally but would Fcrcc be knocked down if they would of lost? probably not.Fcrcc has always been a guage for teams for years and it should be this way since they are the best around hands down. But does that make the rest  imtimidated? No,every great team doesn't win every race or every competition you lose at some point weather you had your A team or your national team.Everyone loses at some point. That's why we all compete for that moment.

Ahhhh...............glad to see the new ONLINE season is starting ,lol. Note it said just kidding !

Anyway....all I said was don't gauge yourself on that race .......if you shoot for a certain time w/ your team you may be short if your trying to compare .Do the best you can and bring everything you have and push your team to its best ever performance .........thats all .

Your right everyone can and will lose at some point and then we learn from it .Some of the best races I have ever been in were ones where we did not win . In Montreal the team I was with ended up 5th ( I think ) over-all and that was 1 of the best A final races I have ever been in .Also have been in a boat that was leading in Calgary only to unfortunately spin out near the finish and lose ..very very heartbreaking after you consider how hard the crew trained .....for a year prior to going into that event .........anything can happen and it may

So if DWW is heading to Calgary...does that mean FCRCC is not?

Title: Re: Results from the 200 m sprints

There are a few teams heading to Calgary this year from the west Fcrcc, Pac Reach, Roli- Fcrcc masters which is the same team and others Im sure.Whoever is going to Calgary this year will represent the west this year. Anyway Fcrcc will be going to Calgary this year.

its going to be a great event to attend, whether you're there to race or there to watch.

There will also be other teams from out here attending Calgary for the general festival, not just for "the big show".  Its going to be a great weekend definitely.

As with most venues, there are local "track" conditions to consider.  Calgary's course has a bit of an underwater stream flowing somewhat perpendicular to the lanes.  We've seen unsuspecting steerspeople lose it time and time again.  ;)

See you all soon!  Hopefully it stops snowing by late August.  :P

It was more the boats I believe .We weren't used to the steering on your boats and as your aware they are very touchy but this time around I believe the "big show" will be BUK's from what I understand .....so most of the steersman have lots of time in them

Alcan should be a better indication of where the teams stand in the west. As for Calgary, I wouldn't count on too many teams from the East coming out. The costs are pretty high to get a whole team out to Calgary.
