Why has there been no talk of DB in Portland its a great festival with alot of good teams?

Looks like Navy and Portland Fire was ready for Ultimate this time.

If I remember correctly,  Ultimate beat Navy and Fire at this year's Victoria festival.

Portland was very competitive this year as far is the top two divisions is concerned.  Navy always has a very strong showing in Portland and this is Fire's home venue.

DH Ultimate missed first place in Victoria by 0.4 second.  In Portland this past weekend we managed to squeeze them out of the bronze medal.  It was nice FINALLY not having "bad boat" issues down there!  Last year we beat Kai Ikaka head-to-head (which is ridiculous) in the third race because of that boat and then they destroyed us in the final race.  Unfortunately for Ultimate, they had that boat in the final race and lost out on the medals I think they deserved.

Thank you DragonSports USA for providing good, clean boats this year.  It was greatly appreciated!  Thanks too, of course, for the great festival, friendly volunteers, fun beer garden, and so on.  This is an event we don't even question going to.

To anyone who made it to our after party at the Residence Inn, I'm very sorry for the hotel staff's BS that night.  We're going to be having a word with them and, if I have my way, will not be giving them our business next year.  Hopefully you all had a good time though.

Did anyone actually see the idiot pushing the barge run over the start line, snag the buoy line, and drag the starter's boat backwards?  The power of human stupidity...  I got to see it from about 200m before he got to the line.  "Is he going to turn?  This doesn't look right.  Oh crap!"  I wonder if the Festival ever got their buoys back.  Someone will probably have to send a diver down to cut it off the tug's prop!

Hey everyone,

I'm finally coming up for air after a crazy weekend. Thanks to everyone who turned out at the 2012 Portland Dragon Boat Race last weekend! 73 teams (48 mixed, 25 women), great weather, very competitive racing, tax-free shopping, the best Beer Garden in the Pacific NW, and hopefully we didn't keep you there too late despite getting late starts both days. Heck, I was beyond thrilled that we finished the 2000m Bridge Races before 5pm... I think we started those at like 6pm in past years, way after they were scheduled to run. Our start/finish line buoys have never been such a problem as they were this year... guess that's one thing that we'll be focusing on fixing in the off season. At least the officials use cameras and fixed points on land to view the actual line. And yes, that barge! Don't get me started... Glad to hear that you thought the boats were finally fair this year. We took a lot of time (and volunteers) washing them the weekend before the race. We also reweighed and then weighted them to IDBF standards and will continue to do so in the future.

Another great festival in Portland!

Two comments for 2013 festival:

1. Would be nice to have a boat on the water to "remind" passing boats to slow down as they approach/pass by the race course. Had a few instances of boats and paddleboarders entering into the race cousre but thankfully not during a race. Even had a jetboat fishtail at the 400 meter mark of the course, were they not informed of the festival?  I mention all this because while approaching the start line for the first men's race on Saturday we had to paddle through some very high waves caused by passing boats. There was an incident at the Bill Alley festival at Barnet (Vancouver Canada) last year. The narrow ocean passage is well travelled and during a race the wake from a passing tug impacted the boat in the farthest out lane The steersperson was inexperienced with these water conditions and the wake caused the boat to flip. Paddlers spent at least 8 minutes in cold water before all were safely rescued. Would not want to see this happen in Portland.

2. You really had to pay attention to the starts. Would suggest a louder megaphone and a consistent methodology to the starts. Our races were very quick starts with not a lot of advance notice until the horn blew, some paddlers were not fully ready. Can Portland find someone like Vancouver's own "Madame Starter" (Kim) to call the starts? Some of our starts were well behind the start line (understood due to river current/tide) then last race on Sunday was past the start line.

All in all a fun festival - well done.

Portland dragon Boat Festival was great as ever despite the tug issue.  Hey everyone, when will Dragon Boat West update their rankings to include Nanaimo, Victoria and Portland festivals?  Being a member of Navy I think we should have moved up the ladder as much as other teams who have competed.  Just a thought.  Hope everyone had a great season and look forward to the 2013 season.   Hooo Waaa!
