  Um. The boat lanes and preceding races really need to posted along with this as well. The effect of one or two Gemini pig boats in this regatta has given one of the most skewed time results ever in the history of the creek. It really was astonishing to behold. And paddle.

Today's regatta wasn't for hardware, but serves to seed the main Rio Tinto Vancouver DB Festival in two weeks. I am confident that those seeding the race grid for RTDBF will take the skewed results into account. 

However, the final placements and times for the Gemini heats in today's regatta are almost meaningless. Good resistance training though.

I was completely stunned while looking at the results of the Gemini heats. Seemed like a random draw of who got the best boat. There was such a big discrepancy between the same teams in different heats that it's hard to not say that boats were not a factor.

It's a shame that this problem hasn't been solved with this being one of many occurrences I've heard at Alcan Regatta on different years. A quick search on the forums will show of the same problems.

It was apparent since Heat 1 that the 2 middle lanes were pig boats... Very, very, apparent. But just to reiterate what kripple was saying (and I agree that it is the most skewed time results ever)...

Ares came in first in their heat, followed by SIB and OW. Not only that, but there was a 5-second gap between the 1st and 2nd boat. Ares went 100% because we were on "the bubble" and risked not making it into the top finals. So we booked it down the course. We were ahead by the halfway point. I was probably the most confused that I've ever been. At first we thought the top teams just wanted to screw with our minds... but after talking to some OW team members, that wasn't the case. What?

Heat 3: top seeded teams RGL and Ultimate... 2:28 and 2:30? RGL ended up in C Division, but 2 days earlier beat Ares with open water during a practice race. Ultimate and RGL separated by 2 seconds. In the semis, they were separated by 15 seconds.

Heat 5: top seeded teams Granddragons and EOTD came in 6th and 5th respectively. Separated from 1st place by 16 seconds.

In the semis, DHB and Ares were 0.5 seconds apart in BUKs.

In the finals, 9 seconds. Nine. And, Swordfish was another 9 seconds. DHB, Ares, and SF are usually about a couple seats away from each other. Ares pulled from SF right at the start and from experience at practice races, that has never happened before - SF has always had a powerful start.

In both Sat PM and Sun... not once did lane 4 or 5 (the top seeded lanes) win their race.

 

Regardless Ares felt good about the final. Maybe I'm getting old. But we had a good race day anyway.

Any plans on finally scrapping those geminis in the near future?

This isn't the best way to retire the Geminis: maintaining them unequally (possibly by making some of them cleaner than others) and then having a major Regatta to show it.

This event cheats any team that raced in those boats. This was suppose to be an opportunity to practice for Alcan. We can't really evaluate ourselves if we don't whether the boats were in good condition.

We are lucky that this isn't Alcan. A large chunk of the teams are from out of town, and they need a good reason to pay for travel and accommodation. Any kind of embarrassment that screws the fairness of the competition would affect the Festival's reputation. Would you pay for airfare and a hotel room if you don't 100% trust that the festival will be fair?

Ok. Maybe I need to do a bit of "esplaining" here on behalf of those of us who are out there in the rain, hail, wind and/or sunny conditions on the waters of False Creek to help run smooth races for everyone. As most of you already know I am one of the officials at quite a few of the racing events in the Lower Mainland. I am going to try to clear something up. We did a random check of some the Gemini’s prior to this past weekend's regatta. The random ones looked clean so we figured they were all in decent shape. As it turns out it became painfully obvious that not all were in the same decent shape. We were using mostly 7 of the 9 available ones so we pulled out the 2 dirtiest ones out of circulation for the races for the rest of this weekend’s regatta and it seemed to have resolved the "equipment" malfunction issue. But please understand when it comes to the big festivals we are sure to check out all of the boats for cleanliness (not just randomly) just so that we can avoid what happened on Saturday morning from happening again. Having said that you are correct that these “preliminaryâ€� regattas are also used for seeding purposes. But knowing that the same people who ran a regatta two weeks earlier are the same ones running the big festival then please rest assured that such results are taken into consideration. Also we are working diligently to ascertain that “equipmentâ€� malfunctions will be nonexistent, or as close to nonexistent, so long as all that use them respect them by using them appropriately etc. But on a much more reassuring note how would you all love it if both fleets of 8 boat heats were all BUK boats? We have been told that a new fleet of BUKs have arrived and are just waiting clearance from customs. Word should be getting out very soon that they are going to be here (if they are not already here!) on the waters of False Creek. So here’s to putting this topic of dirty boats to rest, please?

It's just another reminder that dirty boats are slower than clean boats. A couple years ago all the boats were cleaned 3 weeks before the race, one boat was left on the dock while the others were put in the water. The boat that was left on the dock until race day was 10 seconds faster, or I should say the boats that sat in the water for 3 weeks were 10 seconds slower. There doesn't need to be barnacles growing on it, just a thin film and it makes that much of a difference.

The new BuKs will also be slower if they aren't cleaned right before race day. It's not the boat, it's the cleaning.

How about a sheet on each boat saying when it was cleaned and by who, like they have in the bathrooms at the mall

It does suck to lose because of a dirty boat in any race...big or small...and more so if you pay to race.  Every race boat should be checked and/or cleaned very close to race days. 

And I hate to point this out but there is a sewage outfall just 50 meters east of the DZ dock, so boats can get dirty (slimed) very quickly.
