I have a question.  How are teams placed in the semi's on Sunday after the two races on Saturday?     Is it by times?  Is it by place in the Sat races...or a combination?   If placement is considered, how is the fact that half the races were fve boats and alternate races were four boats?  If you come last in a 5 boat race do you get 1 pt, versus 2 pts if you come last in a four boat race, regardless of time?   I find it confusing, and there were a few huge mismatches, I think?

Just curious.

As far as I know the placements are done first by points accumulated by your finishing positions and in the event of a tie they use the cumulative times as the tie breaker.

Good question about the 4 boat races vs 5 boat race. Not sure who they dealt with that.

Don't quote me on this but I think in years past it was 10 points for first and then it was 7, 5, 3 and 1 for 2nd through 5th. So if you were 4th in a 4 boat heat or 4th in a 5 boat heat you still got the # of points you deserved. This should not change anything in terms of which semi you should have been. Should it? Basically what this does is it makes sure that all the 20 pointers get to race in a semi with other 20 pointers. (20 pointers are the teams that won both their Saturday heats.) Sometimes not all teams who win their first race win their 2nd race and vice versa. But generally they do tend to win in the first 2 rounds due to rankings. In years past if there were more than 9 teams with 20 points then it was based on accumulated times for both races on the Saturday that dictates who the top 9 or 10 are and then the next top 9 or 10 and so forth. So points first and then accumulated times second.

Perhaps one of the race officials at the finish line who handle the data can come on here to confirm.

I am just going from experience in the past. So once again I am not 100% sure about the above.

Teamwork is so important that it is virtually impossible for the team to reach the heights of it's capabilities or achieve winning results without becoming very good at it. You must practice TEAMWORK as a team, not as individuals!

Just to clarify how G2G Race Management handle the race grid (same as Rio Tinto, Harrison, and other host of festivals):

"The determination of division was determined in the same manner as in previous years, points (time when teams have the same number of points).  There were no changes in the awarding of points or how time was calculated.  The festival will notify all the teams, in advancement, if any changes to the system will occur."

Being seeded in lane #1 in your first heat meant you had to contend with a stronger tidal current than the other lanes.  Race #8 showed VYPC even overcame this handicap... most impressive!  Most teams didn't overcome being seeded into lane #1 in the first race.  Why do the top seeded teams need to be given an advantage?  (Since the seeding give results as expected, this vagary of the course is nicely hidden.) Blew byU in the Diamond Championship also seemed to break this mold, but of course the tide was flooding in the afternoon, so it's not quite the same.

They should also correct the race package top of page 3: "A trophy will be awarded to the Grand Dragon Team with the best time during the Festival." This is not correct. The Challenge Cup Info states "Highest placement from the Final heats on Sunday afternoon will determine the winner of the challenge cup."  Again the seeding becomes extremely important... i.e. luck of the draw.  Wasabi Grand Masters probably read only the Race Package, so didn't stay around since they had the second fastest time.  Better to have a race; there appeared to be lots of time.

One could call this "sour grapes":  If times were used for Semi placement, we'd be in Diamond - okay probably wouldn't have won it.  If times were used we'd have the Grand Dragons Trophy.

Mayybe there's some hidden logic:  I'm quite pleased at having the Gold Medal but our last two races were not competitive. Sad  And we weren't sand-bagging just badly seeded, IMHO.

Is there not a better way?

Lady luck definitely plays a big part in the semis. If you are in the stronger heat advancing to the finals your time could be better than any of the opposing heats times, but if you don't place 1 or 2 its off to consolation Very Happy
The first 2 rounds are funny to watch sometimes with 30-40 sec spreads. The comp teams are spread out so they can win and meet each other in the finals.
Lane placement is a tough one. I would not want that job. I guess the teams with the most points in the festival will get preferred lane placement, as for the first race I guess it could have to do with the teams placement at other events.
