Join us for a fabulous day of dragon boat racing along the shores of Lake Washington.  It's in the same place as last year... at Stan Sayers Memorial Park...a protected and calm part of the lake within Seattle city limits. The park offers great viewing of the race and a calm bay with sites of Mount Baker. This park is home to the Mount Baker Rowing Club & Sailing Center, Danskin Triathlon and the Seafair Hydroplane races.

The 8th Annual Seattle Celebrating Life Dragon Boat Festival benefits Team Survivor Northwest (TSNW), a non-profit organization supporting women in their cancer recovery through empowering programs of physical activity and health education.
 
Double Fifth Dragon Boating will be providing us with officiating and technical assistance this year. This race features both novice and rec/comp racing.  Special pricing for out of town teams.

Lethal Mulan aka I think I'm so sexy - Ben Lee

  Team Bio - By day, this rag tag motley crew of people are nothing special. Sure they come from different walks of life, have absolutely nothing in common and don’t have super human powers. That is……until they hit the water and they become….

LETHAL MULAN - aka I think I’m so sexy Ben Lee

Once in the boat – they are transformed from nobody’s to ‘Oh Yeah, We’re Damn Fine!!’ With paddles in hand and life jackets strapped on – they are unstoppable – a force to be reckoned with! At least that’s what we like to think!!! The goal is to get a jump on the start, paddle like crazy and cross the finish line in record time!! And if that doesn’t happen – as long as we finish the race, that’s good enough for us!!!

Lethal Mulan consists of paddlers from the Vancouver area, Victoria, Los Angeles and Seattle. The ultimate goal is to have fun paddling and if we win bling that’s a bonus!!!


Mulan�s Evil Twin aka I KNOW I’m damn fine and sexy Ben Lee

Born to the same mother but separated at birth – the bitter/friendly rivalry between Lethal Mulan and the Evil Twin is epic. Always looking to one-up each other is legendary. The battle field – The Water, the weapon – The Blade and yes, Time is of the essence!

Unlike Lethal Mulan – the ultimate goal is to blow all other competition out of the water. No Mercy – but always keeping in the back of their minds the words that mother told them “Always play nice and by the rules, make sure nobody gets hurt and remember, it’s how much fun you had�.

Mulan’s Evil Twin is comprised of various paddlers from the Vancouver B. C. area. The goal is to have fun paddling and to raise money for a good cause!

Had a great time the past weekend down in Seattle!  The venue was beautiful and scenic, making it an excellent body of water to paddle on.  Couple comments about the experience i had:

-Being a smaller festival, and not being so far spread apart from the racers village to the marshalling/race area meant that it was easy for us to keep track of the races and watch them while being able to hang around our tents.  Also, with fewer teams there, it meant that we were able to easily recognize the other teams racing, and follow their progress throughout the day and chat with them after.
-The presence of a police boat was a nice touch by the organizers.  There were some power boats who were speeding on the lake, and the police boat kept them away far enough that they wouldn't affect the racing.  A quick sounding of the sirens was usually enough to get them to turn around in most cases. 

-The medals could be nicer though.  No indicator of division or anything on the medal.  Pretty straight forward.

-Races were overall very well organized, without any major delays between marshalling to racing. 

-Definitely need to improve the announcement system for the races, as it was hard to hear sometimes what was being announced/the starts etc. 

Overall it was a great festival that I would go to again.  The marshalling, racing, and results were all delivered in a quick and organized manner which is important to me when I go to regattas.  The medals being nicer aren't a deal breaker as I understand it's a smaller festival.  Would go back also partly because I like Seattle as a city as well.  Some of the best moments of the weekend were actually not during the racing, but during the rest of the time we spent in the city.  Amazing food, lots of things to see in downtown Seattle, and cheap bottle service at the clubs led to a great weekend!

What a great festival, thank you to everyone involved for this 1 day event! Would love to see more teams come and participate next year.  Thank you to all the volunteers and management/organization of the day.

It was great to see paddlers join to form teams like Mixed Nuts.  What a fun crew, though I couldn't think of 20 nut names so would love to hear what they all were!

Suggestions for next year:

1.  Can we please move the buoys from 300m to 250m for the 500m race?
2.  The random 8 boat race was fun, but a little chaotic and free for all when all senior, womens and men's team were in one heat. No one really knew what was happening but we enjoyed racing regardless!  Thanks Puppy for posting those results, we wondered how we did.
3.  Was quite hard to hear the instructions when trying to align when the speakerphone system went down, so not sure what other back up options are possible other than what was done.

Overall, it was a fun festival - Brilliant last festival for our team.

Comments about seattle DB festival:

- fun times are always to be had in seattle. good shopping, good eats, good people
- small regatta so really not a whole lot anybody can do except encourage more ppl to come out to race. its always more fun when theres more people around
- paddlers village quite close to marshalling area
- good one day racing, races not spaced out too far apart nor too close together
- could hear the announcements from the paddlers village quite easy

While I'm at it, I want to thank you Kerry for all your advice, spirit and help on/off the water.  We could not have done it without you.  Please pass along my gratitude to the G2G race mgmt team for coming down to help out.  Greg, Jenny J, Laurie, Bonnie & you were awesome~! Thanks to your hard work and expertise the racing stayed on time and organized.

And thank you everyone for the great feedback.  We want to do more and better.  So please keep the feedback coming.  We believe Seattle to be a premier destination for dragon boat racing and want to keep it that way.  We look forward to seeing you next year.

Couldn't have asked for a better day for paddling!!! The weather was fantastic, water was great albeit choppy but made for some interesting racing!
Races were run nice and quick - not alot of down time between races so it made the day go nice and fast.
Only issue i can recall was the starter boat and sound system meltdown.
One of my teams was short paddlers and i was told there would be lots of people wanting to jump in and race.  It took a while but we always managed to find paddlers who wanted to get more water time. 
All in all - a great 1 day event and to have all my teams - Lethal Mulan aka i think i'm so sexy Ben Lee, Mulan's Evil Twin aka i KNOW i'm damn fine and sexy Ben Lee and Jackie Lee's Angels I love Ben Lee win was the icing on the cake!!!

I really enjoyed the Seattle dragon boat festival. The sun was shinning, the water wasn't salty and there where huge swells to remind me of HK. We also didn't have to walk miles from our tents to marshalling and when at marshaling we didn't stand around forever waiting to get on the water. There was a bit of technical difficulty with the starters P.A system but I doubt anyone let that ruin their fun in the sun! All in all a pretty wicked way to spend a Saturday.
I hope next year I get the pleasure of being apart of the Seattle Dragon Boat Festival again.
