Members of Vancouver's Dragon Zone© Paddling Club took delivery of a new Champion 1222 dragon boat on March 6th. The boat was provided by Nightstar Yacht Sales Ltd., exclusive Canadian distributor of Champion Dragon Boats, to support BC athletes as they prepare for championship competition.

The boat will be utilized by teams practicing for the 2011 IDBF World Championships in Tampa, Florida, which will be using Champion Dragon Boats during the competition.

The teams, including FCRCC Starbuck's Waverunners, Riptide, Lifescan, Master of the d'zone & FCRCC High Performance, will also use the Champion to prepare for the 2012 World Club Crew Championship in Hong Kong,

The Champion 1222 will reside at Dragon Zone, site of the 2011 Vancouver Rio Tinto Dragon Boat Race. Any teams or clubs wanting to put the boat through its paces are invited to visit the Dragon Zone© or contact Kerry Chow at 778-863-6018 ([email protected]).

The model number is 1222 which means 12 metres long and 22 crew. The small one is model 912 (9 metres and 12 crew).

Note that it's a crew of 22 which is 20 paddlers plus drummer and steers. So it's a 10-bench boat like the BuK, it can only fit 20 paddlers not 22 or 24.

Are the gunwales made of wood?

Yeah, they're almost exactly like BuK's on the inside, but I think the benches are not though, like plastic faux wood, I could be wrong, don't remember exactly.  I think I just remember them being slippier, maybe it was just cause I tried them when they were completely brand new

Maybe a bit tippier than a BuK, but I tried them in Hong Kong, so everything would be tippy

Dragon Zone probably should've waited to get them from Tampa after the world championships for $6,500 US, but I don't know if they need them right away.  Would be good to see less fortunate clubs get these cheaper ones though and grow the sport in other parts of North America

The seats on a Champion are made of hardwood and screwed into the poly interior hull.
