lol, when i visited the site yesterday it wasn't showing that notice of cancellation.

So I guess its fact now. Its unfortunate that the event is not happening in its 2nd year.

I also see that WE has removed it from their races for the Race Series.

This now makes 3 regattas cancelled for 2009 , Taiwanese , Seatle , and just recently Cultus lake womens , lets hope this trend does not continue into 2010 . On a side note it also means that other stronger, well established regattas , are now picking up more entrants, as teams rush to fill their own racing season

Hi All,

My understanding is that the organizing committee had a meeting last night and the race is still on.  I believe a formal announcement will be forthcoming within the next two days.  I'm going to see if DW can pull it together to go and would be interested to see what other crews (especially the Canadian crews) are thinking of coming as I think there could be some good competition despite the start/stop issues that they have had since the PDBA championships will also be held on that race weekend. 

As for the comment of other races filling up. I can certainly confirm that San Francisco is already at or just about sold out which is much earlier than we usually sell out.   Also, I have heard that Long Beach is experiencing big time interest as well.   

Great time in Vancouver this past weekend.  Hope to see you all on the water soon (Long Beach, Seattle ?, SF !)!

Which part of the Seattle race is cancelled?  I read earlier that Seattle consisted of the PDBA qualifier and a separate festival race.

Hello Everyone,

To avoid any further confusion:

It is with great regret that Waters Edge has decided to cancel the 2009 Seattle Dragon Boat Festival, due to escalating infrastructure costs, insufficient team participation and sponsorship.

We thank the sponsors, teams, managers and coaches, who have worked with us to turn over every rock to try and find creative ways to make this event happen .  However, in the end we found it impossible to deliver a successful event this year that would meet the standards and expectations of Water's Edge, our partners and event participants alike.

We will be working towards organizing the event for 2010.


We understand that TSNW will continue to run the Celebrating Life! event which was to be a part of the Seattle Festival. For more info see http://www.teamsurvivornw.org/

Currently we do not have any information about where or when the PDBA's will be held.

Sorry to hear about Seattle.  The Portland race is still on http://www.portlanddragonboats.com/ and it's cheap to enter.  250m and 500m racing in the 6/16's (no Gemini's or Kaoshungs).  Kai is hosting the beer garden both days with our ever popular Kona Brews and we will be racing as well.  Come one come all!

I was also saddened to hear that the Seattle Festival has been cancelled. 

There are still some spots left in the 2009 Canada Dry Victoria Dragon Boat Festival www.victoriadragonboat.com, which takes place August 14-16, and American teams are always welcome and can pay our Canadian entry fee rate (helps with the exchange rate). 

We're working hard this year to improve the overall paddler experience of our event and we look forward to seeing everyone in August.

This year’s race is sponsored by Team Survivor Northwest (TSNW), a
non-profit organization supporting women in their cancer recovery
through fitness and health education.

TSNW is collaborating with Pacific Dragon Boat Association (PDBA) and
local dragon boaters to host Seattle Celebrating Life! Dragon Boat
Festival.  This Festival includes a one-day community race and PDBA
qualifying races for the World Club Crew Championships in Macau.

This will be two fun-filled days packed with paddlers from the Pacific
Northwest and beyond.  We look forward to seeing you there!  Thanks
for your support of TSNW and the PDBA.

Community Dragon Boat Race –

So who's going to Seattle? Is there a list of teams? If Water's Edge isn't running it does that mean your team won't go?

The info refers to the "one-day community race" and then there's also the "Fees for Recreational 2-day Team". Is it one day or two? What's the scoop with this race?

The Celebrating Life Seattle Dragon Boat Race has been going on for about 10 years.  I first raced with Dangerous When Wet in 2000, then with a combined E-One-Moli / RCH Waverunners team in 2001.

There appears to be a two day festival this year.
Community Teams on Saturday
Sunday is for teams qualifying to be PDBA reps for the World Club Crew Championships in Macau.

Past races were held at Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island, and at Seward Park - near Seattle's Beacon Hill area.
This year's race is at Magnuson Park - closer to the University of Washington
Lake Washington is H-U-G-E!
