Has anyone heard how all the "no go" zones around B.C.Place,"The Garage", and the Olympic Athlete's Village will affect paddling in False Creek during the Olympics??

I haven't heard anything specific about dragonboating, but if you look closely at the transportation, you'll see that Dragonzone would fall under one of the no-go zone if it extends all the way to the shoreline due to its proximity to the housings and whatnot. It seems like the facilities to the west of Cambie won't be affected as much, but I might've missed any on-water restriction for boats and whatnot. If only Dragonzone's restricted and it lasts the entire month, then it just means teams who practice out of there will have to delay their practice for quite a while.

Everything east of the Cambie Street Bridge will be fenced off Jan 25 to March 24th next year.

On a more serious note, what's happening with Dragon Zone during that time?

It sounds like this will only impact teams practicing out of Dragon Zone.  Teams paddling out of FCRCC and VOS should  be able to paddle in the creek to the west of the Cambie Street bridge.

Given the proximity to the village and with the boating restrictions in effect, I think it's a pretty safe assumption that Dragon Zone won't be operating at all during this period.

All in all it's a small price to pay if it results in the construction of the paddling facility in North East False Creek that has been proposed as part of the Creekside park extension.

I think the replacement DZ Paddling Center was getting built regardless of the Olympic Village security restrictions. I remember seeing the Paddling Center during the consultations for development of the NEFC area. There was a separate one that they were thinking of doing for the SEFC side, but I think that was part of the Olympic Village proposal.

I'm pretty sure that the development of the Creekside park (that will hopefully include the new paddling centre) is pretty much a result of the Olympics and the development of the Olympic Village.  I didn't mean to suggest that the paddling centre was a trade-off for the temporary boating restrictions in the creek.

Without the Olmpics and the political need for them to leave community legacies it is highly likley that the whole of the False Creek area would have been sold off for condo's, with little regard for public green space, community centres or paddling centres.

Still, two full months of restriction that cut off a popular paddling centre is something to wonder about. While I know that DZ may not be as busy during that period of time, but I have to wonder about the consequence of it and after the Olympics. Are they really going to just leave the trailer and DB in the fenced off area and completely untouched?

The loss of Dragonzone for 2 months is hardly the end of the world.

With the closures of rinks at UBC, Trout Lake & Killarney, the loss of ice time for thousands of local hockey players over the past few years has been immeasurably more than two months worth of winter paddling for barely a few hundred dragon boaters.

Even if Dragonzone was allowed to operate during the Olympics, the impact of increaed traffic and road closures in it's vicinity during the games would probably deter a great deal of participation.  As well, the official Olmypic activities in thei vicinity would also impact people ability to access Dragon Zone.

David Lam park is to be used as one the official Celebration sites. Live City Vancouver @ David Lam Park will host Olympic and Paralympic sport and cultural programming, a water-side stage and a nightly closing show suitable for the entire family. Live City Vancouver @ David Lam Park will have host thousands of people daily and will be open during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games (February 12 to 28, 2010), along with a pre-Games kick-off event in early February 2010. Proposed hours of operation for the site are 11 am to 11 pm, seven days a week. Preparation of the site will begin in late 2009.

Science World has also been rented by Sochi (host City for 2014) to house their city showcase.

The games are coming people, and with all the benefits (let's hope) will come a few inconveniences.

For those paddlers that paddle out of Granville Island, please keep this in mind for parking during February

Here are the main policies:
Cartwright Street east of Old Bridge Street will be “traffic-calmedâ€� and restricted to authorized vehicles only being allowed to enter, authorized vehicles will include hotel guests, delivery vehicles, buses, Sea Village residents, performers and crew.  All other vehicles will use Old Bridge Street
The Emily Carr parkade will remain available, including the spaces normally reserved for faculty and staff.
All parking will be FREE between 10pm and 10am for a maximum of two hours
Between 10am and 10pm, paid parking will be available for a maximum of two hours, for a flat rate of $5.00. All available parking will be designated paid parking during this period
