16 teams will be participating in the first annual NAVY Chicken Run this Saturday. Sounds like it will be a competition of skill, determination and FUN! All teams will be on the same level playing field.  Beer gardens are open all day! Cheers No wonder there's a wait list.

Most of the agenda is being kept under top secret. Not sure why it's called the "Chicken Run".... Confused Maybe we'll be dodging torpedos or NAVY "love taps"!  Laughing Ohh...I feel the love! Who could ask for anything more!

Looking forward to a fun event! Thanks, NAVY!

It should be an interesting experience.  Our team will be there....full of fear.  I have seen the day's schedule and all the events should be great -- if old guys like me can actually live through them.

I, too, echo the "Thanks, Navy" sentiment.

OK....that was bizarre, interesting, entertaining and a great event!  Pity it was so windy and cool.

Many thanks and kudos to the Navy for putting this event on....what a brilliant concept.  Hope it will be back next year...it should be even better now that we more or less know what we're getting into.

What was this event exactly?

Too many vague responses and allusions for my taste.  C'mon, fill us ex-West Coast paddlers in...

This is a letter that was sent to all of us who participated. Maybe this will shed some light on this event for you.

Hello Teams!

First off, on behalf of the Navy Dragon Anchors, I wanted to thank you all for making Navy Chicken Run 2008 such a great event.  I felt terrible about being off schedule, the morning hiccups and having to drop the third event but everyone - seriously EVERYONE - who came to talk to me said only positive things.  This weekend did nothing but reinforce the knowledge that the paddling community is composed of an incredible bunch of people.  A few of us worked really hard for this (please tip your hat to Melanie, this wouldn't have happened without her) but it was the participants who made this so much fun.  For example, teams weren't asked to wear costumes yet everywhere you looked there was someone dressed up as a chicken or an accident victim or a police officer...  Oh wait, those were real cops, weren't they?  Damn Blu and their morning jogs!

I have had a few requests for the results as well as answers to Event 1.  My apologies for taking a couple days to get this to you.

Attached are the results, listing the points for Event 1, the times for Event 2 and their corresponding points, and the totals (sorted in descending order).

The Stations were as such:
- Station 1: Man Overboard + 5 Point Bonus for Tim Horton's run.  Bob and Dave had to alter this course on the fly as, due to the record low tides we're having, boats would run aground if the dummy was dropped where the X on the map was.
- Station 2: Treasure Map.  There were supposed to be three "treasures" but the strong wind pulled our skiff over one of them and it subsequently was caught in our prop.  Amazingly though, one team actually found that clue at the bottom with no float marking its location.  I was very impressed!  The funny thing is that the same team would have thrown it back in the same location so other teams could find it too.  Ha ha, now my team has to go search for it tomorrow!
- Station 3, First Page: Where's Waldo.  Apparently some teams took a long time to spot the line at the bottom (i.e. "Just kidding. Go to the Trivia page.").
- Station 3: Trivia.  Some teams did very well, some didn't even guess at the multiple choice questions.  For the curious people out there, I have attached the answer key.
- Station 4: Ball Count.  This was an inside joke.  THERE WERE NO BASEBALLS HANGING IN THE TREE!  Some got it, some guessed 6 or 7.  Huh?
- Station 5: Chicken Run + 5 Point Bonus for Tim Horton's run.  This was the most dramatic of all the Stations.  We had one person go missing and, thankfully, return safely.  Eventually.  We had people from all the other teams willing to stop competing to go help search for her.  Again, you're amazing people.  Next year this station will include a full street map of Victoria.  The other drama?  Some idiot going along the Galloping Goose decided to steal the six chickens that had not yet been collected.  We'll post guards there in 2009.  I'm not sure if every team opened their secret envelope but every so often we would hear this loud yelling from across the Gorge.  When I first heard this, I asked Mel, "What the...? Oh yeah!  They opened the envelope!"  I couldn't hear any of it but I'm hoping some people got creative in their "encouragement".
- Station 6: Orienteering + 5 Point Bonus.  This one caught a few teams off guard, as did the super low tide (sorry, I should have checked the tide tables).  I hinted at a bonus but I believe only one team found it, and that might have been by accident.  There were nine words to fill in.  Starting from the dock at Station 6, travelling 50 degrees took you to some pilings.  On there was the first stop with the words Cluck!(1) off(4) and(7) and instructions pointing you to 160 degrees.  That led you to the end of a large dock where you would find the words Cluck!(2) your(5) start(8) and directions to 295 degrees.  This took you to the westernmost pillar of the Pt. Ellis Bridge (aka Bay Street Bridge).  When we mapped the course, this pillar was totally surrounded with water and we planned to hide the clue on the west side.  By morning that side was above water so we placed the sign on the east side.  As many of you learned, the tide dropped even lower and this area too was now above the surface.  I am impressed with those who fought the thick mud got those last three words for their team.  They were Get(3) ass(6) looking!(9), which, strung out, made, "Cluck! Cluck! Get off your ass and start looking!"  Apparently this hint was too vague.  I thought maybe half of you would get it.  Taped underneath all the drummer's chairs (in the empty space in front of the Strokes' feet) were two 5 Point bonuses (one for each team who used the boat).  I'll attach a copy of it to this email.
- Station 7: Knot Tying.  I haven't checked with Bob but it appeared that several teams did well.
- Station 8: In The Navy.  Alright, I made sure this one was thrown in.  When we're marching at festivals, you wouldn't believe how many people hum or sing those first three words, but nobody gets beyond that.  It was payback time!  While I'm sure you could Google it, I have attached the answer key.
- Envelopes A, D, E and K were the decoy envelopes.  I forgot to ask the judges but I don't think anyone made this 5 Point mistake.  As a reward for your honesty, I'll attach the file to show you what you missed.

I think that's it for now.  I want to thank you again for your participation, your enthusiasm and everything you did to make this such a fun and successful event.  I hope to see you all next year at NCR2009!

Rob Grigor.
Navy Dragon Anchors.

The weather was great! Everyone just had a great time! Thank you to all for those who offered to help find our missing runner. It was tremendous to see all the support. I agree with Rob, the paddling community is amazing! Hope to see you all there again next year!

Wow!  What a incredibly confusing event.  I spoke with my sister last night and even then I really had no idea what was going on.  Oh well, apparently they won the "Run" and had fun.  Next year I'll be back in Victoria and I'll have to experience it first hand.

Those crazy Navy people!
