All things considered... another really good race.
Yeah... some folks spent a fair amount of time waiting for ferry traffic to clear.
And yeah... I was one of the folks who never did get into the beer garden (and given that Victoria's beer garden has been legendary in the past, that really sucks).

But the racing was good, the venue is great, the people were nice... What more could we ask for?

Congratulations to Kai Ikaika for their three-peat.
Congratulations to Gorging for making that final exciting.
See you all next year.

Thanks for the great pics and video!

Hope everyone had as much fun this weekend as I did. We all love to do a wee bit of belly-aching after a festival and almost the only complaints I've seen yet are about The Travesty That Was The Sunday Beer Garden. A cryin' shame indeed, and I wonder if there's a possibility of licencing for bigger capacity next year. When paddlers can't get in to receive their medals that's just sad.

Every year I'm amazed at both Alcan and Victoria how a festival in a working harbour can possibly be a success. A big part of how it works or stays anywhere close to schedule is the tireless understanding and support of the military (Alcan), Coast Guard, Harbour Patrol and especially RCMP. Raise a glass to our friends in uniform!

Overall, a fun event.  I heard that GO Rowing and Paddling Association was not managing the race component of the festival, who was?

I like the Millenniums, the course (the whole 500m, with the sudden stop at the end), the spectators and a somewhat secure paddlers village.  The volunteers were helpful and cheery as usual.  For the most part, everything seemed to run smoothly.

Whine... about the beer garden.  First time I in years that the beer garden was boring.  I agree that not allowing the top placing teams to enter because the came off the water later than anyone else was rather disagreeable.  I ended up just getting my medal (without ceremony) and heading to a pub.
Whine... about steering.  The first attempt of heat 27 was bad.  I was pretty far away, but was the trailing official's boat calling boat 2 to correct/hold?  They seemed to do a really good job of stopping right in front of boat 4.  In this case, why wasn't boat 2 penalized?
Whine... about the results online.  They don't include lane placement, which helps as I am not sure who came in 1st, 2nd, etc, without explicitly stating lane 1, lane 2, etc.
Whine... about medical issues.  One team had an injured member and still took that person out on the course.  If anyone is injured, they should not race because not only are they not doing the team any favours, but their injury could cascade into bigger problems during the race.
Whine... about MV Coho. Since the ferry schedules are known, why not allow team to stay on land to wait for the ferries, instead on waiting on the water?
Whine... about water officials (okay, really, the Victoria Police).  As a race gets started, the finish line is clear.  Most boats in the Inner Harbour takes advantage of this to move.  Why wasn't the two Victoria Police boats encouraging those civilian boats to keep to the north side, so they did not cause wake that may have interrupted a race?

Quite honestly, I can't really think of anything to whine about.

That really sucked about the beer garden! Some of my team didn't get in because of the 350 max capacity.  Sad Oh well, other then that and the bit of rain in the morning, it was an all round great weekend. Victoria has always been one of my favorite festivals, and will continue to be.

Good job to everyone that went and we'll see you next year!

As one of the few lucky people "allowed" into the beer garden. We missed everyone barred from entry. It was so lonley in there. I had to leave, because I felt agoraphobic. It's not the Victoria beer garden, unless it's a complete crush. Laughing
