Most teams that paddle through the winter are serious comp teams . Teams like FCRCC ,Pac Reach are probably the 2 that you will see out on the water the most . If your just looking to jump on to stay in shape and not commit than they are probably not the teams for you .You might also try teams like Acme ,I think they may train through the winter as well especially if they are thinking of taking a run at the club crew race-offs next yr for Malaysia
Other alternatives are to join a club such as FCRCC and paddle oc1 ............thats what most of these comp teams will be doing .They concentrate more on oc1 in the off season as it will make you a stronger paddler in the long run as you have to pull your own weight .FCRCC also offers winter training programs for oc1 etc .Just check the board at the community center or contact them

FCRCC also has a novice OC6 programme that will continue through the winter. We're currently paddling Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings from the Burrard compound. OC1 novice sessions are Thursday evenings from Granville Island. There's a coach at all these sessions. An easy way to try OC1 or OC6 is to pay the orientation fee ($50 I think). If you decide you like it and want to continue, the fee will be applied to the full club membership (currently $230 or thereabouts).
Warning: the OC6 sessions can be pretty tough.
By the way, I heard DWW is another db team thinking of gearing up for a run at the national club crew championships. Looks like the success of FCRCC is generating some enthusiasm in other teams to reach for the top.

great news! its this kind of competition that pushes everyone to put forward their best and train that much harder.

does anyone know if this schedule will continue or will it change this coming winter?  i was going to winter paddle last year but the days the novice oc1 went out changed after i paid the $50 deposit and wasnt able to make it b/c of my work schedule.  im hoping i can apply the $50 i paid last year towards this year tho. Â

Teams like Gorging Dragons, Xtreme Reach, Dragonauts, Sweet & Sour Dragon Balls, etc. Are doing OC-6 & OC-1 out of Gorge Rowing & Paddling Centre. Costs are $120 per half-year per member.
Other teams like Capital Iron Dragons are doing the OC-6 training at Ocean River Paddling Centre (subsidiary of OR Sports). Also there is West Bay Marina. The costs are comparable.
All these docks are located in Victoria.

i don't believe they've had their scheduling meeting yet. I think think its later this month, or at the beginning of october. contact the admin about the $$
For anyone worried about being cold during winter paddling, all you have to do is make sure you wear the appropriate clothing, and the paddling will keep you warm. just don't fall in like i did

Hey Teresa,
I paddle with Dragonhearts Team Ultimate (we were in Comp B in Alcan and Platinum in Victoria). Our team will be training throughout the winter. We'll be going out on OC-1 from Alder Bay at Granville Island to work on our technique and maintain our paddle fitness.
Let me know if you'd be interested in joining us! We haven't set our OC-1 practice schedule yet because we're preparing for Kelowna, but send me an e-mail at
[email protected]
and we can chat.

* wanker wonders whether we could fit a dragonboat with skis/blades and use icepicks to propel ourselves.
Those of us not along the coast are jealous. We are stuck with sitting on the side of a swimming pool and paddling in the water. Bah!
