It was a pretty cold and miserable day Sunday for the Community Long boat teams. Managed to snag a half decent location to shoot some pics (from the second floor balcony where the Bar was. (how convenient!)
If the rain and wind wasn't bad enought the whole floor would be shaking for the bass of the speakers I was standing next too!
All aside I managed to get few good shots in of the Mayhem. I believe the Alcan team won the mens and not sure about the womens (came just as they ended so no pics  Embarassed ) but I got the Community teams mixed races where ALcan won followed by FCRCC and a ROLI/Subaru combo (or something like that, too many paddlers!)
Enjoy!

it was indeed quite the day, with the water getting worse as the day progressed.  the start for the mixed final was intense to say the least; boats being tossed about by the big waves....    seeing the boats jumping up in the water throughout the course was pretty funny, and from what i heard, a fun ride for the front 2 seats.

sucks i wasn't able to paddle this year, but i had fun as a spectator/multiple team cheerer.  i know everyone had fun, bruises and cuts aside.

From another forum:

Unofficial Mixed Community results:
1. Lamb Chops (in lane 1; furthest from the foreground)
2. Wet Noodle (in lane 3; composed of VO2Max, FODB, Roli, Subaru and FCRCC paddlers)
3. Alcan Festival Team (in lane 4; SubaRoli)
4. Petarded (in lane 2; JDA jerseys)

Some poor fellow from the Alcan Festival Team got pinned under a boat when he was trying to run for the baton, too.  Mix steamrolling the runners and taking paddle swings at other teams' paddlers (your coaches if you're lucky) during the clashes and you've got the makings of one fun race.  What'll be the new thing next year?  "Accidentally" capsizing another team?  I can't wait.

JDA would have came third if that poor kid didn't fall flat on his face while Alcan squeaked by to hit the gong first.

Yeah he jump out the boat too early, but didn't fall just got kinda ran over. It looked pretty bad at first but when he got up ok and we start talking about it after I can't help laugh at him for getting run over by the boat.

I really enjoy this event it was quite different, and it's fun to try out new things even in the freezing rain. They only thing I would try to fix for next year is somehow reduce the amount of injury that happened.

One of the lifeguard girls for that race told me that the Alcan team was coming in at an angle and was gonna collide with the team ahead of them (Petarded/JDA).  That's why the guy on the JDA team got run over (he didn't fall on his face).  But I guess he didn't look back to see the other team coming his way either.

You can see in this picture (from Lethal's photos) that the Alcan team is squeaking in.

Not to say it was anyone's fault, the wind and waves were nuts I hear!

Anyone else got pics of this event?

How can you tell that he jumped too early? You were not in the boat at the time. I don't find getting run over by another boat is funny and it's disrespectful to your teammate to think so, he could of have gotten hurt.

I talked with some of my friends on the Alcan boat and the Petarded fellow fell out of his boat into the water and then he got pinned.   They said the UBC boat handlers were there and kept the boats at bay the best they could.   Always two sides of a story, different way of looking at it, from underneath a canoe or from inside the canoe Shocked

One of the Alcan paddlers said their runner got hit at the cone pickup.  They weren't sure which team did the knocking but it seems there was lots of bumping going on out there.

Sounds like fun was had by all.

I think they should have a rematch at the Cranberry Festival, next weekend at Fort Langley.

it's one of those "you had to be there moments" -" thank goodness the boat didn't  run you over but heck, -lmao-" - it's like almost getting run over by a bus at surry...from one persective it's "how can you laugh at something as serious as becomign road kill"  on the other hand one might think/ feel the opposite such as -heart stops- mentally process what just happened  then burst out laughing Laughing "i almost became road kill - and i'm alive to tell about it"

not something one should be proud of but slightly entertianing to those who don't have much of a life =D Wink

i heard from a fellow participant - "it was windy, wet and brutal."[]
Congratulations to those who had fun crossing the finish line Very Happy

cheers,

I finally woke up from my coma, I almost saw the light, but I took strength to pull myself out of it. I thank god for giving me another chance . At that moment my life flashed right before me, back of my mind, I knew I'll never be the same again.  They had my leg amputated and luckily found a donar in sourthern germany. I can sort of move my left toe now! I wake up everynight still having that vivid image of me under that canoe, consuming me, the horror!!

It was windy wet and brutal! Had adrenaline filled fun though, despite everything.

Thx Jordan, I am only laughing now though. nothing to fuss over. and just minor bruises.

didn't need to be on the boat.  i was standing 10ft away on the shore taking photos.  he jumped into about a foot and a half of water and couldn't lift his feet out of the waves and stumbled (at least from my perspective).
many people got injuries (some minor, some more serious) during the races while still in the boat.  the circumstances were funny, the actual event was unfortunate.  relax....    don't get yer knickers in a bunch.   Laughing

y'all should know that Kev is made from bionic parts, they took him back to the lab and retrofitted him with some new joints and hydralics.

Great pics btw, Alcan team may have bonged the gong first, but at least the 'kids' beat 'em to the beach first   Cheers
