Yeah
You would think they would let the teams know about where the finish is so the teams can accurately plan their finishes
5 meters will make a the difference between first and last in a lot of races.

Ya...Kinda weird how the start line was past the buoys, yet the finish line was before them. I guess the tide wasn't the same near the shore line.

If you were smart enough...you would have looked on the north shore to find the orange marker, then would go to the south shore and look for the orange marker on the pier of Science World and find that Orange marker and line the two up. IF you trained your steersperson and drummer correctly and sent them off to examine both the start line and the finish line before their race.
It's tidal waters folks...and windy conditions (the case in Kelowna) that cause buoys to move in any direction.

Wow! Thanks for all the info, Guido! I'm sure the majority of the population of False Creek/Science World/Alcan fans/etc were clueless and thought the buoys were the finish lines. Ya know you could be a bit nicer too. You know, instead of being such a cranky, condescending turtleface.

There is also a slight difference in setting up your visible finish line on the actual finish line and having it move around due to the water conditions, and having the anchor cable for the finish line bouys set meters past the actual line to begin with!!
And as for your rather arrogant comments

Not every team has the race experience, knowledge of the water conditions, or inside information on the course set up (not pointing fingers at anyone, but many racers helped in the set up of the course) to know that the visble finish line couldn't be taken as gospel.
The fact that the finish line bouys were past the actual finish line was something that should have been passed on to all teams at the managers meeting Saturday morning. Oh, right. There wasn't a managers meeting. What was that all about?!?

My 2 cents worth

First off , I have always been coached to race past the bouys at the finish line so having them past the finish line is probably good.
Second, if you look at the photos, the lane 1 marker is pretty much on the mark throughout the finals.
Thirdly, if you look at the finish line photos the 8 feet different of the markers would not have changed any of the placing (from what I can see) except maybe for the comp B final.
Fourthly, the tide was 14 feet on Saturday and Sunday so there has to be enough slack to allow for the tide thus the bouys will move somewhat.
Fifthly, most teams I have ever paddled on, in the final race the finish starts about half way (if you want a medal), so the 8 feet off at the end is of no consequence, having the mid way mark close is important though.
Six point, your caller and steersperson should walk the course and pick a point to call the finish. This should have been done on Saturday morning before you race. After the first race, in the debrief, if you hear comments that it was a short finish then go back and pick a different point. Adjust is the name of the game.
In the end, it is up to the team to determine the finish line, especially on tidal water. We should just be happy that they don't line up with the bouys which would mean Lane 1 and 2 would be shorter than all the rest.

Impossible. Sorry to disappoint you.
Perhaps you should fire your coach. It's his/her's duty to instruct and scope the race course out themselves. From my very first year (and that was a long time ago) and the coaching clinics, technical courses, seminars etc. etc. etc. I've attended they all taught us to scope the field, the arena, or where ever the event is being held and familiarize yourself with it. Get to know all the points. If your coach isn't teaching you all this...then blame them for NOT preparing you fully.
And the same goes for you too Straightline. You want the organizers to hold your hand and guide you down the race course as well?
Come on people....you're there hours before your 1st race. There's no excuse. Besides....how many times has your coach told you to keep paddling until your steersperson tells you to let it RUN and hold hard(note it's not ride).

Not disappointed at all, Mr. Guido guy. Thanks for guiding us in the right direction .
I can see the light.

Some of them already do

Your info really is informative, sir. I honestly do learn something new everytime I read your posts. And I guess Lethal is right. We wouldn't want you any other way aside from your cranky self, turtleface.

Yep, the buoys are after the finish line, so what. If you start your finish too late then that is your fault. Take ownership and don't rely on others all the time, maybe you will make it into Comp then
I thought it was great of them to allow them to be posted and the only thing to happen is complaints. If the quality was better I would buy one myself. I guess after all this talk they won't release the finish line photos for all of us to see (next year).
