Author Topic: How to conseal Sharpie art on paddle? Anyone?  (Read 5626 times)

I drew on my paddle with a Sharpie, and I don't want it to fade away, or at least for the next little while.

So it there any kind of product that can prevent the colours from fading? Smile

My best guess would be to re-varnish the paddle useing a varnish w/ UV protection in it .You can get some from Home depot just don't remember the name .I'll have to take a look and post it later . But it's too late for Alcan as it takes 2-3 days to dry enough to use .

 Its either this or get a piece of clear decal from a graphic shop that does cars .They can cut you a small piece and then just lay it over top making sure not to get to many air bubbles

um.......how much would the decal cost?

and if i varnish it today,would it still be ok to use for alcan?! still got 2.5 days....................

normal spar varnish will do fine and it just takes over night to dry

- drew on my paddle with sharpie and revarnish it

I had 4 decals done up (one for my paddle) for the princely sum of 7bux USD.  I asked him to use a lightweight vinyl and it came out perfect, it holds up very well on the a paddle (if you apply it properly).

He just sends it to you by mail, I don't think he even charged shipping.

What I do is I lightly sand the surface with light grit sandpaper - that way the ink from the pen actually penetrates and dries into the paddle, rather than on the existing smooth finish, where it can run off when the varnish is applied.

I don't use Sharpies for the reason that the ink tends to fade and lose it's boldness.  I use acrylic paint, and paint my images freehand or with a frisket (template/stencil).  I use this product from Lee Valley called Durathane, a polyurathane clear coat which is quite good, very strong and UV protective.  I use it to re-coat scuffs on my goalie mask, which takes ALOT of punishment.
