Did the seal "Dog" appear?

Looks like the seal "Dog" appeared today again? Anybody see it pop up its head in the semi? Or was that a team throwing a race to get in a lower division, as Guido has indicated does happen.

Interesting overall I notice the Gemini times were faster than the 6-16 times. I guess teams are figuring out how to paddle them. There was some excellent heats today (and weather, my sunburnt face....) FCRCC mixed is the team to beat right now with PR and Subara (not yet showing their stuff ...(no dog today
...) and ROLI getting batter every race. Too bad about Ruckus and Success having that mishap (collision) as that would have made for a kick ass final. The Swordfish made it again to the Final!
I guess twice lucky..... Alcan is next..Let the games begin!

I heard there was a collision between Success and Ruckus, that explains their times. Why was there such a big time difference between 1st and 4th? 11 seconds?

Yes they did... but not by much. They beat out FODB by 0.10 of a second in the semi's to make it into the A final.
Nevertheless, a job well done!! Congrats!

In the morning's A final, right after the race started, a False Creek Ferry decided to cut across the race course near the 350 meter mark. When the onlookers at the finish line realized that the ferry was not going to stop for the race and that it was in a collision course, there was a lot of screaming from the shore, but the officials didn't say ANYTHING on the radio. How do I know this? I was standing right next to the finish line tent and could hear everything on the radio.
So what DID happen was that the officials boats were telling the boats to steer left to avoid the ferry - especially lanes 5 and 6. Lane five (success) followed those orders, but lane 6 (ruckus) did not. This resulted in a dangerous collision and what really shocked me was that they allowed the race to continue. Surely in the A final, having a False Creek Ferry interfere with the race would be reasonable grounds to call for a restart!
They should have either stationed a boat near the 350 meter mark to control ferry traffic or ordered all boats to hold and restart.
As for the laughable organization of the regatta... let me say this:
Partway though the second round of the morning session, racing was suspended while the finish line people were scrambling to find a tape for their video camera. This led to an attempt to find someone to blame for the lack of tapes, followed eventually by the rewinding of existing tapes.
But don't worry, they'll get 8 new tapes for the real race in 2 weeks.
Just before the B finals race in the morning, the finish line drama started up agian. This time, the finish line people didn't know how to operate the camera. After much tinkering and fiddling, they called out on the radio - "Is there anyone out there who knows how to operate the video camera?"
A woman does show up after a while, along with two black doggies and eventually, order is restored. But not before memorable lines like...
"All the buttons are worn off on this thing!"
"I know this camera works, I use it all the time!"
I believe that the delays caused by the organizer's own inexperience leads to a tighter schedule. This increases the pressure to get the races over with as quickly as possible, and if necessary, look the other way when fairness of the race comes into question.
Oh so much fun...

At one point I was standing near the finish line tent and I heard the officials say that the computer crashed and they were waiting for it to reboot. Some BAD luck at False Creek yesterday.

I heard someone said the 6-16 boats have not had their bottoms cleaned for a long time. The 6-16 boats are longer and heavier so teams just don't like having to flip them over for cleaning.

I have seent he Subaru team cleaing the 6-16s a week before the regattas! Kudos to them for doing the dirty deed. Trust me in saying don't look at the bottom of those puppies before having lunch..And speaking of dirty old boats that should be broken up into paddles...Any one else have the mispleasure of paddling the Barney boat (purple 6-16). Time to retire that baby....
