Thoughts, that was an awesome day of racing, too bad it started raining near the end though.  Conditions on the water were pretty good if a bit windy and choppy.  A cakewalk if you did White Rock a couple weeks ago though.

Some kudos are in order for the race staff and volunteers, it was a smooth running event.

I think Specialty Subaru Legacy got a bit of a raw deal with a dog swimming out into their boat's path?????  But they looked great out on the water.  They'll be a team to watch @ Alcan.

Fodb's had better races, but it was a good regatta to learn from and figure some things out.  The hunt for precious time begins =)

Kudos go to Swordfish and Ruckus for showing some good speed, they've both done an excellant job.  

Roli had a pretty good day too I figure.  I wonder if the Roli crew will be close to repeating their performance from 2003?  Hope hope hope... don't jinx... hope...

Alpha Red represented quite well with a sky-high rating. Anytime someone mentioned Alpha, it was quickly followed by, 'did you see their rate? wow' I suppose it's a cue taken from some teams back east, there's one or two teams reknown for having such a high rating.

False Creek Grandragons kick ass!  What's more to say?

Eye of the Dragon has always been a team I rooted for, they were doing good out there as well.

Final Congrats go to the overall winner, FCRCC Mixed.  Not that that was any surprise, but kudos to Pr and roli for hanging it right there with them.  (maybe they pulled us along for the ride )

Wow, there's no way that the course could have been 500m. None of the teams even came close to breaking 2:00. Recall that last year, the couse was approx 450m and LOTS of team broke 2:00.

The course is close to 500m (give or take 5 meters).  Big tide, 14 feet, with the tide going out until 1PM, which means most of the races were against the tide.

If you look at the Gemini times, they are just little slower than Alcan finals and it is still early in the season.   This was the first set of races for a number of the teams can't expect the best right away or have we seen the best from FCRCC, PR and Roli for this year?

Remember last year there were no Gemini races all 6/16.  If we look at last years Alcan results then that would make it a 6 seconds faster so FCRCC Mixed has a time around 2:05 (in 6/16 terms).  Based on the results, Alcan should be another interesting year.

So who has mastered the Geminis and who have not?

GPS was likely used for the Regatta, they brought a GPS to DZ on Sat for set up.

Who'd figure meeting a brown Labrador in the middle of False Creek? That's definitely a first in my paddling experience.

If there were a lane 5, that's how far Specialty Subaru had to veer off to avoid the dog; then correct back to lane 3. Welcome to racing though!

heh, actually this did happen to me during team trials.

I was steering and cute little Mala jumped into the water to swim to her owner who was steering the other boat.   I had to swerve a little bit for her.

I don't really have much to add in regards to the regatta. Races were done similar to usual setup from previous years, with racing going from Cambie Street bridge toward the TELUSphere (ScienceWorld) and Racer's Village along the south shore of False Creek.

Pretty much everyone's pre-race rankings went out the window after the first couple races. With Swordfish and Ruckus beating out FODB and the False Creek Women, repsectively. It's interesting to note that Hamber did amazingly well by ending up in the Division C championships and posting the fastest time in that heat, ahead of TD Lightning and RGL United. Too bad they got DQ'ed for leaving their assigned lane.

Apparently news spreads fast and people are passing news from West out to the East.

Poor Subaru legacy in the semi ........they were heading probably to the A final when in the middle of the race course appears a dog swimming ( what were the chances of that ever happening? ) in the middle of the creek ? That was a hell of a way out from the shore for the dog ......yikes,lucky he didn't drown .Poor dogs eyes were probably huge as the d/b was bearing down on it . Watching the race fron the shore all you saw was Subaru out front and then make a hard turn to avoid collision w/ the dog and then try to get back into their lane and finsh but it cost them and ended up in the consolation A race .Next time guys ......

ya, ure right, there was only 19 people as we were short-handed for this regatta and had to borrow another STRONG paddler (hi guido...     ) from team masala to get our ladies up to 8.  We only paddled 19 so we could rest up another paddler who was injured, which proved to be difficult as we ended up being really left heavy and from what i was told, the people on the rights had to lean out so much that they were losing balance in the boat.  However, my hat goes off to swordfish as they surged from being behind and catching us at the end...

ya, i did my count and only saw 7....some were wearing hats, so i couldn't tell...maybe seat 1, right side could be a girl?....hehe....

i believe this regatta is like any "real" festival where ure not allowed to paddle for 2 teams.  if ure referring to us picking up the paddler from masala, they weren't in this festival.  i believe there were only 32 teams in this regatta.
