I'm sure some of you caught a glimps of the paper today, Province/Vancouver Sun regarding the Molson Indy Vancouver.

Here is an excerpt

Quote
...Despite considerable speculation in recent months that the Vancouver race, threatened by inadequate corporate support and planned development around False Creek, could be dropped or replaced...

Wayne Pledger, a spokesman for the city's engineering department who works closely with the Molson Indy people, confirmed Monday there is nothing in place yet for a necessary report to be submitted to city council seeking an extention of the race.

There had been talk the race circuit site would be avialable in its present form for at least two more years, but (Bob) Singelton [former VP of Moslon Sports and Entertainment] said any deal to race in Vancouver would be for 2005 only.  "It would be definitely be a one year deal, we just can't risk it," he said "Nobody can give us a guarantee [of the site's availability through 2006]."

Part of the site is to be turned over to Olympic organizers for athlete housing for the 2010 Winter Games...

You can not deny that this will not effect Alcan down the road.  Are days in False Creek numbered?

It's not fair to compare Alcan to the Indy.

Let's see... the DB festival doesn't close off large sections of streets to traffic. The festival doesn't create gigantic crowds that make local residents feel trapped in their apartments. Dragon boat drums aren't nearly as loud as Indy car engines and oh yeah, we don't make the area smell like exaust either!
The festival will probably stay in False Creek as long as it doesn't lose money, and the waterway remains safe & open (ie, as long as FC doesn't turn into a giant marina or something).

Well... from what I know, local residents do get free passes to the festival as an "appeasement" for having their area of residence in close proximity to the festival. And I am told that they do hear the drums and the crowd from where they live. Are they just a bunch of whiners? Who knows...

Honestly, I can see Alcan getting booted out of False Creek because nothing really stands in the way of development these days unless the people it affects make a big fuss about it... and so far there hasn't been as much as a peep, other than when the squatter boats became an issue in June.

hmm... let's see... I did hear rumours of lost money a couple years ago... and I can't really say that the False Creek is all that safe when one of my fellow paddlers was on antibiotics due to some infection from the water awhile ago... Would I want to go to some other locations? No, but something's got to be done about the area so development and local activities can function hand-in-hand. It's either that or we will just end up paddling at Ditchmond for our local festival...

Well for the record, I wasn't comparing Alcan to Indy, hence the bold type "planned development around False Creek".

You can not deny the fact of revenue generated from an event like the Molson Indy.  There is always pros and cons to everything.  In this case I was not referring to what negatives the event has on some people living in and around false creek.

Well as you should know, some of racer's village this year was occupying Concord Pacific ground. Once that chunk of land is gone, I would like to see how they fit all 180 plus teams in a tiny racers village!  Trust me, once work starts on the athletes living quarters for 2010, Alcan will feel the squeeze (square footage wise). If nothing can be done in the near future, as chaos put it...

This would be news to me...
Last time I heard anything about a new rowing center it was about the UBC one that should be built by 2005... and that one was no where near False Creek. It's actually in the middle arm of the Fraser River where the Richmond festival was held this year. You can find more information on the UBC Rowing Boathouse here

They do have plans for a paddle center in the plans.  The one thing that Paddleboy has incorrect is that nothing will happen until post 2010.  I was at two of the planning meetings with the public and I talked directly with the planners and they indicated nothing will happen until post 2010 because the area on the south east side is designated for the Olympics.  The city is committed to the DB festival and I think it will stay in the creek for as long as the organizers want it there.  Of course things change but that was the city's response in May of this year.
