Nokia teams were hand picked.  They had 3-4 teams worth of paddlers, and it was all based on PERSONAL DECISION!  As far as I know, there was no fitness test.  They're getting trained pretty intensively, so maybe they're going up ..... but then again, they can also be going down if the paddlers that got chosen were relatively weak.

Rumour has it that the 3rd non-competitive team decided they want in on the races now.    Maybe they got jealous.   Laughing

So there will be 3 DH teams at Alcan after all.

nokia is in a rebuilding year.  the last 2 years of leadership was a disaster.  when they took over, it was a rec b gold medal team.  last year their "premier" team got as far as rec d.  during the summer, they cleaned house and brought in new people. its going to take a while to undo the damage.  all the serious paddlers left when this guy took over in 2002 or so.

those are some serious words dude/dudette. so i'm assuming "this guy" is no longer coach? what percentage of last years nokia remains?

don't know who is still left.  i just know they cleaned out the people running it the past few years.  i do know they have a lot of new people this year.  my sources tell me a lot of people are happy with the new changes and look forward to progressing.  but i think they have an uphill battle this year.

Uhm, sounds like nortel. the politics, intrigue, scandal, oooww ahhh, lol!

hey bbq, to clean house, someone has to do the trump (your fired!). I dunno who has that sort of power within Nokia since I always thought the club was run by committee.

Maybe it came from the corporate headoffice?  Laughing

Rebuilding, don't write us off so soon, we may just surprise a few ppl.

On the contrary!  I wish DH the best!  I heard they had a decent showing at the regatta.
I believe the two people who started the team have that power but I could be wrong.  I do know they are the ones in charge now.  Nokia was always just a sponsor of the team.  They never had much to do with the running of the team, but they no longer sponsor them anyway.

hey bbq, your sources seem to be quite deep into the club.  Wink

So you are suggesting that the entire leadership (captains, coaches, coaches) of the club last year was fired by the two ppl that started it. They cleaned house, put in new leadership and are now rebuilding. And coincidentally the sponsorship was lost? C'mon, there's gotta be a juicy story.

Oooooo, please do tell, inquiring minds what to know!

Hey BBQ...so just who is this "guy" who took over in 2002?  Was he a coach or just some administrator from their committee?

curious that you signed up the day after the regatta (but didn't know how we did), put up some interesting comments, suggest some things then retract it as hearsay (nokiagirl wonders to herself what does this all mean)

ps P was a founder? hahahahahahahaha! rotf!  Laughing you've had 2 much pork fat

hey bbq, not sure where you are getting your facts about house cleaning...  Thinking
As I recall, the "premier" Nokia team did well in Kelowna last year and the core paddlers, coach and captain have all returned.  All three Nokia teams did well at Kelowna, not to mention...one of the teams took home some hardware.  Laughing
As for last year's alcan results...comon, we all know the issues with the race grid last year, hence the new format this year!

Hmm...sounds to me like you are on the team bbq...maybe you know something we don't.  What's the scoop?!   Wink

so why are they keeping the nokia name:?:

Maybe they're trying to look good so Nokia might decide to sponsor them again next year?  If so, I wish them all the best!   Smile

Really?   Thinking   People blaming the boats for their performances is pretty common (not to say that it is right, it isn't), but I've never heard anyone put it to the race grid.

What was wrong with last year's grid?
