FCRCC Novice Outrigger Steering Course
Presented by the FCRCC Women’s Distance Outrigger Program


Date : Sunday, Nov 3rd, 2013 1:00 - 5:00 PM
Location : Granville Island - False Creek Community Centre
Course capacity : 20 new, eager wanna-be steerers !
Instructor : Lori Velisek

This course is designed for paddlers who would like to learn how to steer an outrigger canoe in a safe and supportive environment.

The course will include a classroom session that will cover the basics of steering including the roles and responsibilities of seat 6, how other seats relate to steering, safety issues, the basic mechanics of steering strokes and information about steering blades.

Following the classroom session will be a practical on the water steering session with a qualified steersperson in each canoe to coach and assist you.By the end of the course, you will be able to steer a practice with your regular program.

No previous steering experience is necessary but basic/novice level of outrigger paddling is required.

Please bring your regular OC6 paddle, any steering paddles you may have and your PFD. A steering blade will be provided for you if you don't have one for the session.

1:00 – 2:40 Classroom Session (location FCRCC on Granville Island)

2:40 – 3:00 Transition to the Canoes @ Alder Bay

3:00 – 4:45 On the water steering session in False Creek

4:45 – 5:00 Wrap up
