PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Rowing & Paddling Centre Robbed and Vandalized – Fort Langley, BC, CanadaFort Langley, BC, July 21, 2008 …In the early morning of Saturday, July 19, the Fort Langley Rowing & Paddling Centre (FLRPC), located in the heart of Fort Langley (Glover Road), was robbed and vandalized. Approximately $20,000 worth of paddling equipment, including a Dragon Boat (locked), was stolen. The scope and cost of the vandalism to the facility has not yet been determined. The FLRPC is operated by the GO Rowing and Paddling Association of Canada (GO), which is a non-profit amateur athletic association, and registered charity, dedicated to developing rowing and paddling sports in Canada. FLRPC offers community based programs for youth, youth at risk, University students and adults. FLRPC is also the proud home of the Abreast with Fort-itude Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boat Team and the Trinity Western University and University of the Fraser Valley Rowing Teams.
This theft and vandalism is the latest incident in a string of crime that has plagued FLRPC in recent years. Over the past two years, over $30,000 of equipment has been stolen from FLRPC. Although this equipment has been secured, thieves have still managed to steal the equipment. GO/FLPRC shares the facility with the Fraser Valley Canoe Club, which also had its dragon boat stolen and cut in half two years ago. Although there are a lot of great things on the rise for FLRPC, including new docks, facility and hosting two large scale rowing events later this year, this unprecedented amount of theft and malicious damage is making it close to impossible for a non-profit organization to continue offering community based, non-motorized water sports.
With summer programs in full swing, FLRPC/GO needs support in replacing this stolen equipment to ensure programs can run. If anyone is interested in providing support, please phone 1-866-658-6333 - tax receipts are available for all donations. If anyone has any information or tips about the assailants, they are urged to contact the Langley RCMP and/or Crimestoppers.
