Whistler Dragon Boat Festival to benefit the Whistler Adaptive Sports ProgramWhistler, June 10, 2008- Water’s Edge is helping hundreds of individuals with disabilities get active in water sports in Whistler.
The Whistler Adaptive Sports Program (WASP) announced today that Water’s Edge will donate the proceeds of it’s beer garden, being held on June 28 and 29th at Rainbow Park, to WASP’s Adaptive Paddling Programs. Water’s Edge joins the Resort Municipality of Whistler, Scotiabank, TELUS and Captain Holiday’s Kayak and Adventure School in supporting this Initiative, which aims to increase the participation of individuals with a disability in adaptive water sports.
“Water’s Edge is demonstrating its commitment to the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program through this tremendous donation,” said Chelsey Walker, WASP executive director. “Water’s Edge will be leaving an adaptive paddling legacy in Whistler that will benefit the community for many years to come.”
The Whistler Adaptive Sports Program has been offering adaptive water sports for three years. The donation by Water’s Edge will help to purchase an Adaptive Outrigger Canoe. WASP will be working with the Pemberton Paddling Club to offer adaptive outrigger canoeing. Outrigger canoeing joins canoeing and kayaking as part of the water sports offered by WASP.
“The Whistler Adaptive Sports Program continues to expand its slate of adaptive summer sports,” said Walker. “As Whistler moves forward towards to becoming the premier mountain community for individuals with a disability, WASP will provide and promote new programs to enhance the both resident and visitor experience.”
Whistler Adaptive Sports Program is a not-for-profit society that provides year-around, recreational programs for people of all ages with disabilities. It is a centre for learning and sports excellence that has a local, regional, national and international clientele and we encourage independence, self-confidence and self-motivation for all of its athletes and participants through outdoor recreation.
