Excerpted from today's Vancouver Sun:

Lower Mainland boaters will no longer be able to dump raw sewage directly into the sea within 5.5 kms of the coastline under new regulations announced Monday by the federal government....That will effectively prohibit dumping in Greater Vancouver's waterways - including high traffic areas such as False Creek & Bedwell Bay.....Dr. John Blatherwick, chief medical health officer for Vancouver Coastal Health, said he supports the new regulations, but added the impact of pleasure craft on water quality in the Lower Mainland is often exaggerated. "It's always blamed for it and it's never been the problem," he said. High fecal coliform and E. Coli counts, he said, are usually the result of heavy rains that cause sewage outflow problems and agricultural runoff. Blatherwick added that water quality is general worst in bodies of water, such as False Creek, that don't get much natural flushing from ocean tides and currents.

I'm all for better water quality in False Creek, but I'm not sure how they will enforce this.  Confused

Given the amount of traffic in False Creek, the transient nature of the squatter boats mooring around False Creek, it'll be tough to enforce or catch the culprits. Unless anyone else has heard otherwise as to how they plan on enforcing the new reg's....or perhaps it's going to be left to the dragonboaters out there to report violators.  Smile

Perhaps he ruined his previous lens on a past evidence-gathering mission gone wrong.

ummmm maybe Luke was asking about LW having his new lens so he can gather up some evidence with it to help enforce the new rules? Just a thought though! LOL Laughing And perhaps the referrence to selling all those DVD's is how he would be able to pay for the new lens? Just a wee little thought Colossus my buddy you! Luv ya man!   Wink

When out in a dragonboat in False Creek last Tuesday evening, there were three non-squatter powerboats with a gorgeous bevy of beauties showing off their bikinis. It was instant caterpillar and a great show. But, as we went by these boats, the larger of the three discharged its sewage holding tanks right into the creek! Now this is illegal, but to what agency would we report this to, even if we had the time and the cell phone on board to call someone? These were not squatters but visiting boats having a party rafted together in the creek. It's not just the squatters but the general boating crowd thinking the creek is a sewer (which it is most of the time) and it's okay to dump away. Ottawa can ban dumping all it wants, but we have to have ways and means to report and stop this crap ( pun intended).

To protect False Creek from squatter boats and sewage waste disposals from recreational pleasure craft, the following needs to happen:

1) By-law enforcement officers or wardenship patrol
2) Sinage warning of prohibition and fines for "dumping"
3) Turn False Creek into a "Motor boat free zone" (or at least the East Bay)

I have talked on occasions to city councillors and parks board commisioners, as well as the planners of the South East False Creek development plan.  The idea of a paddle boat only zone, with the present Plaza of Nations marina grand-fathered in, appealed to many of the people I talked with.

There is plenty of attention geared for Winter Olympics 2010 for the development of the athelete's village in SE False Creek.  There was lots of attention on the development of Toronto's race course for the World Club Crew Championships for dragon boats.  Iimagine what would happen if we could build a permanent boat race course on False Creek for dragon boats and rowers.

But these kinds of action takes a lot of political networking and advocacy work...

There are 4000 dragonboaters that race in the Alcan Dragon Boat festival.
If every dragonboater contacted their friends across Canada and the United States, we could have an overwhelming presence and pressure... especially if we worked together with the rowing associations across Canada and the USA.

We could achieve action now:  by-law enforcement or motor boat ban.
and later: permanent race course for the future.
