This is a small fun race.  I first attended when Lotus used to host the race as part of Golden Spike Festival in Port Moody, on Canada Day weekend.  There were safety considerations at Port Moody with traffic from the boat launch, and dragon boats getting hung up on the sand bars.

Barnet Marine Park is a beautiful section of Burrard Inlet.  Loading the boats is done from the beach, similar to Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Harrison.  The water can be a little choppy, but I have never experienced them holding off a race due to winds, as has happened in Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton or White Rock.

This was where I first experienced dragon boats paddling into Indian Arm, back in 1993, paddling to Belcarra Park.  Since then I have also paddled outrigger canoes from Lotus up to Twin Islands and Deep Cove.

Lotus Sports Club is one of the pioneers of dragon boating in Vancouver.  The Lotus Sports Club was first formed in l986 to compete as a team in the first Vancouver International Dragon Boat Races at Expo '86. The team quickly forged a reputation as a top team and rival to False Creek Racing Canoe Club, winning the  Canadian Men's Dragon Boat Championship three times.

The Lotus Sports Club is home to some of the friendliest people I know in dragon boats and outriggers.  They have created a real community oriented race.  Trophies are given to the top three overall teams and the winning team of each category.  There is a draw prize with proceeds going to the Bill Alley Memorial Scholarship.

Bring your tents, because weather in May can still be drizzly.
