Methodology
Why was there a change in methodology?
I'll be honest... We changed from the previous methodology of placement percentiles because it was providing standings which I was not comfortable with. With this method, it is slight modification of the East Coast method. If it has worked for them these many years, I might as well try it.

So how are these rankings calculated now?
The scoring is done as such. The teams that placed in any qualifying regatta received a score from 1 to whatever (1st place receiving 1 point, 2nd receiving 2 points, etc.). The teams' total score from all regattas are then divided by the number of regattas they participated in. The average score resulting from the above calculation is ranked in ascending order to determine the top 35 teams in the Lower Mainland.

Schedule considerations were also taken into account for this score. Teams that only placed once were immediately thrown out since this does not prove anything.

What are the differences between this method and the East Coast method?
The East Coast methodology took only the top 20 placements of each qualifying regatta, while I am taking all the placements in consideration.

How do you determine a qualifying regatta?
In order to not allow a team to travel to Timbuktu and pound on weak local teams for ranking points, a regatta qualifies for inclusion in these rankings if at least five teams participating in the regatta have top 20 placements in at least one other event (based on a rolling year). Also, since this is a ranking of the top teams in the West Coast Canada, participation in festivals outside of this region will not be included. Furthermore, there must be at least 20 teams attending a regatta for it to qualify for rankings consideration.

What's up with the colours?
I've labeled the session which each team raced at the Alcan Regatta (see Alcan Regatta Colour Code table). Since some teams have moved up and down as I have placed the session in the Sat AM, Sat PM, Sun AM, Sun PM order, the colours would signify some of the out of place teams.

Why isn't my team in the rankings?
Most likely because your team has not in the minimum number of qualified regattas to be eligible to be considered. Currently, the minimum to be considered is 2 races.

Should the juniors not be ranked separately?

Theoretically yes, the Juniors should be ranked separately. However, the Juniors present in the rankings were included because they had participated in the FCRCC Regatta against Mixed teams. Also in the Sunday morning session of the ADBF Regatta, there were mixed adult teams present that they races against. Since they have raced against and did quite well against mixed adult teams, I decided to include them into the standings.

If you're not happy with this methodology, will you change it again?
Probably... Much like everything in dragon boat... if it doesn't work, it'll be changed...
