Here's some sad news from Australia I came across...
They'd better have good insurance on these...
"A group of teenagers may have started a fire in the grounds of Glebe High School, destroying 12 dragon boats worth $150,000, witnesses said yesterday.
The boats, three of which were new, were owned by Dragon Boats NSW, whose members were training for the World Championships in China."

That is sad.
Now....good insurance as opposed to bad insurance is.....?????
They would be pretty silly not to have insurance on these....they would most likely also be carrying some sport liability insurance as well which is quite expensive.

I had a chance to meet many of the Aussies that have been affected by this, and this really is too bad. They were a great bunch of people to hang and drink with after the racing was done in Capetown. A few of our boys also got some of their jerseys in a swap. I managed to trade for a hat from the NSW state team, which is their national team. Hope they can still pull out a decent showing at the worlds.

There is some talk about trying to find someone that has dragonboats that are close to being retired. There is hope that maybe these boats could be sold or even donated to the Australians.
If any boats can be found, someone will try to look for an Australian shipping company or airline to donate transporation.
So if anyone knows of any boats (I don't think it really matters what kind..), please let me know so I can contact the appropriate parties.
And please... don't even bother suggesting the Gemini's...

Dear Dragon Boat community and friends
Words cannot express what I have been feeling since 5pm on Monday afternoon. For those who are not aware we lost all 12 dragon boats (including Tsunami's) this afternoon that were kept at Sydney Secondary College, Glebe. There is nothing left boats, sweeps oars, racks everything has been burnt to the ground.
However that said I am determined to not let this defeat us, and let whoever did this win. I know as a community we will all come together strong and solid and help each other through this.
1. Carlos Ung has very kindly offered the Australian Team use of his boats so they can continue training without disruption for the World Championships, for this I'm sure you will join me in saying THANKYOU.
2. I have already notified Race 1 of the situation and they are prepared to start building us new dragon boats on Monday morning. Yes, all the dragon boats and racks are insured! Upon discussing the situation with Race 1 tonight they have promised to clear the decks and will be able to churn out 1 dragon boat per 7-10 days for us, so we will try to get back up and functioning as quickly as possible. I have also rung Canada tonight to find out the cost of importing 10 BUK boats from there as an alternative (I think it will be too expensive, but we'll see)
3. The insurance company will be notifed first thing tomorrow to set the wheels in motion. Once they have been and inspected the damage we will need all hands on deck to come and help clean up the mess and get it off school grounds asap. Chris and I will organize a mini skip, we will just need many hands and shovels to cleans it all up.
4. Chris and I will be meeting with the School first thing tomorrow morning to discuss where do we go from here.
5. Next on the list I will be asking Trevor Brown to see of we can borrow his 2 old boats that aren't getting used much so we can get teams back on the water and training ASAP.
6. For the Ryde Aquatic Festival in Sept - this will still happen we will use the 3 boats currently located out at Penrith that the Australian team are currently using for time trials and hopefully DSA will allow us to borrow theirs for the event, then if we don't have 6 boats back by the first DBNSW points regatta in on 10th Oct we will do the same thing again.
7. Can I please ask that everybody bears with the situation whilst we sort boat usage out, and we will all just need to co-operate and be flexible with each other so we can all get back on the water as quickly as possible.
8. There has been a huge amount of media interest in this, from TV, paper and radio, so please direct any interviews to me.
9. I have been thinking may be we could organize a HUGE DRAGON BOAT FUNDRAISING EVENT "fire sale" where all clubs and everybody in the community can get involved and support us. If anybody has any idea's or suggestions or would like to start organizing something let me know.
Thank you to everyone who turned up at the school this afternoon/night to keep Chris and I company and for all the phones calls and support it has been wonderful and just goes to prove what a fantastic bunch of people are in the Dragon Boat Community.
Can you please forward this email on to all the paddlers in your clubs, so they know what is happening, I will keep you updated with where we are up to.
If anyone has any questions, concerns etc, please feel free to call me, just be patient as I'm sure my phone will be going non stop over the next few days.

I guess I haven't visited the Forum for a while..What shocking news!
I'm going to Perth (Western Australia), in October, and will try to make a side-trip out to Sydney. Instead of shopping for useless Billabong stuff, I think I'll make a nice personal donation to the DBNSW.
