any advice on losing weight? coach has me running laps *sigh* because he wants me to shed some weight. anyone have any tips on weight loss yet still retaining mass? (sounds redundant, yes)

ive been running about 50 mins daily now and i havent seen any results. i think it's the ice-cream-sandwich breakfasts that's the culprit.

It's probably not helping any... why not switch to a breakfast salad?

I thought you had complained about being too small about a month ago?
Did you overdo packing on the pounds or something?

um.. i don't think running is suppose to help you lose weight.  I believe it's just suppose to be good for your general health.

To lose weight (i've read this somewhere and i've heard a lot about it too)..
1) do aerobics... it's suppose to burn fat
2) no eating after 8pm or was it 10Pm?  i think it was no carbs after 8pm, no eating (period!) after 10pm.
3)  and to gain mass you need to go to the gym.  muscle weighs more than fat (i was told), however,  you should do more reps w/ ligher weights to tone up.. otherwise, you'll look like arnold? (again i was told).

do not kill me if these suggestions don't work.  i've only read and heard about these.  i've never dieted before.  However, I do lose a substantial amount of weight after a period of extreme stress.  Smile

good luck

yeah, i've been trying to shed some pounds too. but i haven't been successful because i messed up my schedule and i just started anyhow here are some tips my "trainer" told me. he used to weigh 210 and he's 5'5 1/2.

1. same idea as what lavelle said, but no carbs after 4pm. no eating at all after 8pm. (this is where i screwed up)

2. be smart about what you eat. you can have 1 cheat day a week (this is also where i screwed up) Embarassed

3. Don't mean to yell but, MAKE SURE YOU EAT BREAKFAST! it's extremly important! this will kick start your stomach and help your metabolism. i've noticed weight loss after a bit.  you feel better too

4.any sort of cardio at least 4-5 times a week for at least 30 min.

5. if you have the time and energy, calorie count. make sure you burn more than you consume.

yeah being stressed out helps too, but if you're like me you're more likely to gain than to lose.  and besides stress kills

i think that's about it, i don't want to turn this into an essay.  good luck

Actually I have no idea why coach wants you to run...you're definately not in need of it, even if you are having ice cream sandwich breakfasts. (Which is probably better than my cold leftover roast pork breakfasts Wink But if this helps, here ya go buddy:

Apparently, spicy foods and mustard also helps to increase metabolism.   I lost 15 lbs just prior to Kelowna by doing cardio, and eating the right foods.    I ate what my body needed, not just simply eating what's on the table.

Because Tim encourages input from everyone, I'll crawl out from under my rock.

I've dieted before on a bet.  Ended up dropping from 173lb to 152lb.  in a couple months.  Still managed to retain enough mass to bench double my body weight.

I don't recommend massive changes in weight if you're already quite fit.  I'm 5'6" so I have a lot of room to work with.

My advice:

-you have a hormonal flare in the early morning which tells your body to wake up. Any cardio at this time would be very efficient.  I did 5km at about 6am

- in the afternoon I'd hit the gym and work out heavy.  Right after I'd swim at the pool or do a 5km run.  Ate a lot after.  Body was being worked hard so it was constantly stuck in a repair state.  Lower percentage of my intake was going to glycogens, fats etc.

-Ended the day with a 5-10km run at about 11pm at night.  My rationale here was that the majority of glycogen and fats are produce while you're sleeping so taxing the body right prior to sleeping will keep the sympathetic nervous system fired up as long as possible.  This may not be the smartest rationale, but hey I wanted to win.

-Lavy and Voon have good advice.

Sorry to give you my life story, but I thought it might help.  Take what is useful and discard the rest.  Make a bet with someone.  Loser should have to do something humiliating.

If my physiology was off mark let me know.

My response to the original post...

Any exercise is good.  I read somewhere that one minute of exercise extends your life by one more minute.

Keep execising and remember to change it up.  Go Biking, Cross-Country Skiing (not downhill), Swimming.  I prefer biking cuz it's less stress on the knees.

So if you run everyday but don't see results then ask yourself this:

Do I feel like I have more energy than what I'm used to during the day?
or am i more awake?

I may not have lost any weight but do I feel I can lift heavier things than before?

Do I remember what I did yesterday or what I did on the weekends?  Do I pay more attention to details?
I found that when I was younger I couldn't remember my weekends.  I started exercising more and more as I got older and I found my brain was actually working.

Exercise isn't just for the body.  Try to remember that your brain is a muscle as well.  It needs the most exercise.
