Hi,

I'm wondering how and where modern competitive dragon boat racing got started. Most online resources say something about ancient Chinese history, then something about Hong Kong in 1976, and then good record-keeping begins with the annual IDBF events in 1995. But I haven't found records of which countries competed early on (1976-ish), what order they finished, and when/where club crews got started. For example, did club competitions give rise to international competitions? Or the other way around? How did it happen?

I'd especially like to know:

1. Can anyone point me to a record of competing countries and finishing placements for the early Hong Kong international races, from 1976 - 1995 (especially the first 10 years of that)?

2. When did organized club competitions begin? Was it around the same time? Can anyone point me to a record of results for major early club competitions?

Thanks for any info! (PS, I first posted this on the network54 forum and was advised to re-post here.)

From 1976 to 1991, you may want to contact the organizers of the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Race ([email protected]) as the Hong Kong Tourism Board sponsored the major push to the modern era of dragon boat racing. After 1991, when IDBF was formed, you can always contact them (http://www.idbf.org/contact).

Organized club competition in Hong Kong and southern South-East Asia has been around for a long time. In term of modern racing outside the area, that was a big push from this Hong Kong Tourism Board, with their donations of teak dragon boats around the world. Some places picked it up quickly, others did not. In Canada, there were new clubs created for dragon boating (e.g. CIDBFS aka Dragon Zone) while existing canoeing clubs adopted the sport (e.g. False Creek Racing and Canoe Club).  For Vancouver results, see Dragon Zone ([email protected]), Victoria results see Vancouver Island Paddling Club (http://www.vipaddling.com/contact), Calgary results see Calgary Chinatown Association ([email protected]).

Not sure if this helps, but it points you in the right direction.

Don't mess in the affairs of dragons, for they find you crunchy and yummy.
